I'd heard of this musical before but knew literally nothing about it beyond the title, in fact I had assumed it was another one by Rodgers and Hammerstein. After having watched a number of Shakespeare plays with my mum throughout the year, she suggested giving a musical a go, and chose this one as she thought it might appeal to me. As you can see from the rating, she was right.
The version I watched was the 25th anniversary edition which, though I don't have anything to compare it to, is hard to imagine being bettered, as the cast were great and the performance fantastic. I didn't love all of the songs as I did with The Book Of Mormon or The Little Shop Of Horrors, but there were a lot of good ones and none that I really disliked. My favourites the first time around were Movie In My Mind, and If You Want To Die In Bed, but anything sung by The Engineer was good fun. I say 'the first time' as I've no doubt I'll listen to the soundtrack and/or watch the show again in the future.
I won't go into detail on the plot as I found it a nice surprise to gradually realise that it tells a mature and moving story that would not be out of place on the silver screen. All I'd say is if you're the sort of person who feels that musicals may have something to offer them, maybe you even enjoyed one of the ones I mentioned earlier, but you've seen a few others that have put you off, this is a good one to try.
For me and my mum it gave us an enjoyable afternoon that I'm sure we'll look back on fondly in the future.
I love this musical. When I was teenager, I had a piano/vocal/guitar version of this book that I was not crazy about. Fast forward to years later as an adult - I found an easy piano version of the same book. I loved being able to sight-read the pieces from the musical. I only wish it had every song from the musical. For example, one of my favorite moments is not in the book where the two women meet in the hotel room. Oh well. I still loved playing everything :)
I've never actually seen this on the stage, but my mum went when I was a teenager and brought back this book of lyrics and the music on CD for me. I listened to nothing else for weeks and learnt every song off by heart. Somehow I fear seeing it on stage now, as I can only expect to be disappointed.
