Among Jurgen Becker's many accomplishments in this study is the presentation of a new, historically grounded explanation of the phrases "kingdom of God" and "God's reign" - the central terms of Jesus' proclamation. Becker's explanation, informed by several decades of modern research, has consequences for our understanding of Jesus' activity and implications for the interpretation of his ethos. Steeped in the history and culture of the early Christian period, Becker writes in a manner accessible to both seminarians and to a broader public. The portrait of Jesus they will encounter in his pages emerges from lengthy investigations of a complex and tangled history and from a thorough exploration of the canonical and apocryphal texts. His book will be widely adopted, and also read by general readers - Christians and Jews - to whose dialogue it seeks to contribute.
