The wonderful people of Black Hare Press have supplied me with a magnificent box of amazing literary horrors. The amazing anthology, 'War', was a true phenomenal and devastating read.

War is a devastating and horrifying phenomenon that inflicts immense suffering and destruction on humanity. It leaves behind a trail of shattered lives, loss of innocent civilians, and irreparable damage to communities and infrastructure.

The physical and emotional toll on soldiers and civilians alike is immeasurable, leaving scars that can last for generations. Beyond the immediate human cost, war exacerbates political and social tensions, hinders progress, and hampers economic development.

And in the end, who wins?

Fifteen international authors bring you their own take on the theme through their phenomenal stories.

Dear reader, get ready to experience firsthand, drama, death, and loss in the trenches, across the dividing wall, at the end of time, and the end of the universe.

Take a good, hard looks through the lives and deaths of spaceheroes, swarthy no-man's-land soldiers, friends until the end, and witching warriors battle for land, love, rights, and empires.

The fight is hard, the rewards high, the loss of loved ones, devastating and the stories in this anthology never fail to put you expertly right in the middle of the action.

Well written characters in cinematic quality scenes that will take you on a dreadful yet beautiful journey.

Even though I loved each and every story in this anthology, I couldn't help but loving a bit more 'Under Leviathan's Shadow' by Pedro Iniguez and 'Templar's Terrors' by John McNichol.

Black Hare Press never seize to amaze with the amazing literary offerings they been releasing.
Check out their catalogue. Oh they have such great sights to show you...

“WAR,” an anthology of short stories, is a compelling collection that delves into various aspects and periods of warfare, offering a diverse and intense exploration of its themes. Each story brings a unique perspective, making it a captivating read.

“Company 33” by Julie Sevens stands out with its vivid portrayal of the harrowing realities of war, encapsulating the tension and grimness of conflict. Similarly, “House of Ash” by Alexander B. Joy offers a gripping narrative set against the backdrop of aerial combat, immersing the reader in the intense and perilous skies of war.

Other notable mentions include “Memory Like Sand Broken Like Stone,” “Witness to the End,” and “The Skittering,” each contributing to the anthology’s overarching theme with their unique settings and storytelling styles. “Under Leviathan’s Shadow” and “Revelations” also add depth to the collection, exploring the psychological and moral complexities of warfare.

The final stories, “Archangel,” “The Cherry of Her Lips,” and “The Butchering Block,” maintain the high standard set by the earlier works, bringing the anthology to a strong conclusion. “Templar’s Terrors” and “Neutronium Overdrive” provide a blend of historical and futuristic perspectives, adding a broad spectrum of scenarios and time periods.

Overall, “WAR” is an anthology that successfully captures the essence of its theme, offering a range of perspectives that are both thought-provoking and emotionally resonant. It’s a recommended read for anyone interested in the multifaceted nature of war and its impact on humanity.

‘WAR’ is a challenging, harrowing, emotionally draining read, but also at times a surprisingly satisfying one.

Fifteen international authors each interpret the theme of war in their own individual way. Stories include conflict in the trenches, border controls across East-West Berlin, alternate history, alien invasion, religious fanaticism, and military/scientific weapons experimentation, and PTSD, to list just a few.

All are excellent stories, but the following made the deepest impression on me:

‘House of Ash’ by Alexander B. Joy – one pilot’s endeavours to rescue his friend shot down during aerial combat, with its physical and emotional consequences.

‘Memory Like Sand, Broken Like Stone’ by T J Berg – explores love, memory-loss, shying away from confronting unpleasant truths, and medical experimentation after devastating injury.

‘Witness To The End’ by Jodi Jensen – an amazing story of utter pessimism and total destruction, which nevertheless managed to leave me feeling positive and satisfied. I really liked this one.

‘Eternal Soldier’ by L N Hunter – explores how war dehumanises mankind, and how money really is the root of all evil, especially when military funding becomes restricted.

‘The Cherry of Her Lips’ by Ann Wuehler – a historical tale of old gods and witchcraft.

‘Under Leviathan’s Shadow’ by Pedro Iniguez – lots of dramatic action and courage against overwhelming odds on an oil rig. I hadn’t expected this kind of story in a war collection, but it fits in perfectly and gets a big thumbs-up from me for being a great read. This was my favourite.

I thoroughly recommend this anthology to anyone who enjoys complex characters in dark, grim, shocking, horrific wartime stories set through the ages and, sometimes, across the solar system.
