Deep in a forest cave, a mother bear gives birth to two tiny cubs. As they grow, she protects her cubs fiercely and teaches them all the things they need to know to survive in the wild. The cubs must learn how to catch fish in the raging river, gather berries in the woods, and climb trees to escape from danger — for one day, during their second summer, they will leave their mother to find homes of their own.

‘Bears in the Forest’ is a story about mother bear and her two cubs. Mother bear gives birth to two cubs during winter and then looks after them and train them for one year to prepare them for the outside world. The growth of cubs and the passing time is indicated through change in the season from winter to spring and then to summer and slowly back to winter when cubs go to sleep and when the spring follows cubs are ready to leave mother bear and explore the new territories.
This book has lot of facts about bears written at the foot line of the pages and children can learn a lot from it. In this story by Karen Wallace, the changes in the season are portrayed very beautifully. The growing cubs, their activities and mother bears implied concern for their safety is depicted very nicely. The cycle of seasons can be discussed with children.
The book is suitable for 5-8 years old as the vocabulary is everyday, familiar one and words can be read easily using phonological knowledge.It is a picture book so meaning can be inferred with the help of both, simple language and illustrations.
There is a moment in the story when cubs are playing away from mother bear and when mother bear whacks the cubs for not listening and not staying in sight is a good point for discussion with children. Its good to ask children’s initial thoughts about the mother bear and then gradually draw their attention to the hidden concern of mother bear for cubs’ safety is because of her love for her children. Parents do sometimes carry out harsh actions but it is always for the benefit and safety of their children. At the end this concern is contrasted with the assurance that the cubs are grown and ready to take on the challenges in their life through lines “Her cubs are laying where she can’t see them…Mother bear has taught them everything she knows.”

Bears in the forest tell us about young cubs who grow up. It teaches kids about when bears are born, hibernation, what life is like for young bears, and a few other things. Each page has a main "plot-line" following two young cubs and their mother bear during their first year and small bear facts on the bottom of the page that goes just into a little more detail about what is being shown on the page.
This book is so cute! It's a simple read, good for young kids. The illustrations are on point. They are beautifully drawn. The content isn't too hard or confusing. The bears seem to have their own personalities. I love this book. I also love bears, so this book is good for me. My favorite page is when the mother bear eats honey. That is my favorite illustration
I would use this in a classroom to teach about bears (obviously.) It could also work to teach about the seasons, and how some animals go into hibernation during the winter season and come out during the spring and summer. This is an easy read, and I might just have to pick up a copy of the book for my classroom library!

This book is a very cute, educational story about a mother bear's adventure raising her cubs. It's great for a quick read.

The beautiful illustrations of bears in this book help the reader understand the importance of life for these animals. The story tells of a mother black bear and her two cubs through the seasons. Very interesting and simply told. Along the bottom of the pages is extra information.
