This modest volume provides a delightful introduction to the great Persian poet and Sufi mystic Khwāja Shams-ud-Dīn Muḥammad Ḥāfeẓ-e Shīrāzī (1315-1390) known commonly as Hafez or Hafiz. Translator Elizabeth Bridges offers the reader 23 translation of poems by Hafez plus 15 of her own poems that "aim to convey the original spirit" of other poems by Hafez which presumably defied her ability to produce true translations.
The result is splendid. The poems which are a joy to read are similar in tone to the seven Sapiential books of the Bible. Bridges in other words makes a strong case that Christian, Jewish and Islamic Widsom are all one and the same. This collection is well worth the time required to read it.

November 22, 2018I may read this, as it available via P.G., but I'd prefer a more recent translation of Hafez.
