Connor Jackson and the Memory Thieves
Connor Jackson lives a quiet life in Lower Molehampton. He lives in the house he was born and brought up in and, apart from his secretive job as a civil servant, he pretty much lives an ordinary life.
That is until one morning, when Connor is woken up by something, so he decides to investigate. He notices a massive molehill in the middle of his back garden; molehills have always been a feature in Lower Molehampton, but there appear to be more than ever now, and this one is huge. Upon closer inspection of this mountain molehill which has appeared during the night, Connor discovers a glass jar sitting in the centre of the mound. Thinking nothing more than this being a strange occurrence, Connor hides the jar away and forgets about it altogether. That is until a few months later when, late one evening, Connor is ambushed in his home by two sets of intruders. Attempting to flee, he is eventually captured. Fearing for his life and not knowing what these kidnappers want, Connor is thrown into a world which he never would have into a world where he discovers the truth about life and death

A school prize in English was an early indicator for my interest in writing fantasy. I gained a Bachelor in International Studies, influencing my story telling with a focus on modern contemporary issues. I love travelling and lived in Asia for six years. CSI goes underground, quite literally! In this intriguing fantasy, the moles live in a parallel world beneath a town divided into distinct areas based on wealth. It is the moles' job to preserve the memories of people who have passed away. Alarmingly, Professor Wingnut's jar of memories goes missing! Will Wingnut's extensive knowledge fall into the hands of those who would do evil? Will moles and humans be able to collaborate to rescue the memories? Who IS the 'mole among moles?
Author Nick Ponter's character development is exceptional, and although the target audience for this book is tweens, as a teacher and literacy specialist I thoroughly enjoyed it and have chosen it for an adult book club read. I highly recommend that adult readers of crime drama and fantasy get this book for themselves if they have no 'tweens' to whom to gift it. (If you gift it, borrow it!)

Imaginative, unique and intriguing!
A must read for teens and adults! A really well written story that keeps you gripped from the start. The characters come to life in this original and unusual story that will keep you guessing until the end. I will never look at a mole hill in the same way again! Looking forward to the next book with anticipation.

Funny, imaginative, light, best English-style story-telling. A very enjoyable reading.

I very much enjoyed Nick B. Ponter's debut as an author mainly because of his easy and unpretentious style, the lively and humourous dialogues of the protagonists and the hilarious slapstick-like depictions of highly tumultuous scenes be it chases through neighbours' gardens, mole style underground transporation or football matches that get out of control big time. The book is certainly great fun, but not without raising a few more serious questions about life and death, the ethics of the meat industry and eating animals as such, even the pros and cons of the political regime in mole world. Thus it is certainly of a wider scope than most books for young readers (as the publisher has categorized it) and definitely not without its merits for adult readers as well. The plot is full of unexpected turns and surprises and changes of perspective, but never becomes overly complicated. No wonder it develops into a real pageturner when the going gets tough for Connor Jackson and his crew trying to break free from mole world and regain their former lives. In the epilogue the author waters our mouths for more to come of Connor Jackson's adventures and the question is will it be a straightforward sequel or a book of its own standing. If it is the former I certainly advise to make a wish for the first volume for christmas, because the second one is already on its way as rumours have it. I cannot say that my esteem for the moles in my garden has greatly risen over the course of reading this book, also I will probably not refrain entirely from flattening their mounds on my premises, but the prospect of being at their mercy one day will definitely make me think twice. To put it in a nutshell: Well done, Mr. Ponter, and please keep entertaining us!

Thank you @nickbponter for sending me a copy all the way from Germany. This book is a fantasy, YA fiction and deals with a very sensitive topic in a sensible manner.
Have you ever wondered how to broach the subject of death/loss to your child? Or why does one sock go missing after laundry?This book might just be the answer. Although it is YA, I feel that middle graders can also pick it up.
