I've been accused of being an empath. I believe it's true, but I've never really delved into what that means. The title of this book convinced me that it might help me understand my own psyche a little more.
I was right about that, but it's so much more.
First, you should know that the subtitle is a perfect explanation of the contents of the book. The main title is the hook. I mean, it is if you ever wanted to believe in psychic abilities, especially the possibility of having them yourself. But the main title might be a bit misleading to the mainstream. The book isn't about the "psychics" we see in Hollywood or reality TV shows. It's not about talking to the dead or reading animal's thoughts or solving missing persons cases by touching the abductee's hairbrush. The psychic abilities addressed in this book have to do with things like intuition and gut feelings. In fact, chapter seven offers practical (like the title promises) exercises for strengthening your intuition.
The organization of this book is perfect for someone just starting their research into empathic tendencies. It starts by explaining what it means to be an empath and how to tell if you are one. Then it takes the reader through useful tips on things like how to avoid emotional burnout, how to find balance and clarity, how to build self esteem, and, finally, how to begin harnessing the power of your empathic mind to heal yourself and possibly others. Toward the end, you'll find several scripts you can use to begin practicing some of the suggested activities. At the very end, the author has included about 13 pages of resources for further reading. It's a book that meets you where you are and allows for growth. I love that!
As the title states, the book is a practical guide. It's a starting point. Think of it as a map that you would pick up at the beginning of a hiking trail on your first visit to a national park. It points out the basics that you need to know and offers nuggets of wisdom to help your journey. It also provides opportunity for more intense hikes when you are ready to proceed.
For me, one of the most interesting discussions in the book is the aforementioned chapter 7 regarding intuition. I learned that science has determined that "there are actually three 'brains' in the human body...The head, the heart, and the gut all have their own set of neurons that process what is happening around us every day" (108). The chapter goes into detail about each "brain" and, especially, the unique intuition abilities of the female brain. Suddenly, a whole lot of stuff in my life makes sense!
In addition to helping me understand my empathic tendencies, the book is also helpful to me as a writer and a teacher. The first part of the book explains the types of empaths and energy vampires. My writer brain lit up with all sorts of character arcs and plot possibilities. This book could absolutely be used to help create interesting characters (even ones that aren't psychic). My teacher self marked several passages to use or keep in mind in the classroom. There's a reminder to help students relax and open their minds before beginning a lesson because a distracted or exhausted brain struggles to learn. I'm also excited to use the sticky note activity found on page 99. I can see several uses for it in studying poetry, characterization, argumentative writing, and even grammar lessons.
The book is a quick and interesting read. I recommend it for empaths, teachers, writers, and anyone interested in the way our minds and spirits connect. One more thing, you don't need to be an empath to learn from this author's wisdom. The guide includes tons of information on how to simply calm your thoughts, set boundaries for yourself, and create a more positive outlook. In today's world, we can all use more of that.
This book was absolutely wonderful! I learned enough a lot about being an empath! I would recommend it to anyone who would like to learn more about their gift! Very grateful for having any opportunity to review it!
A book you could pick up again and again, an easy to follow reference book with exercises and tips for empaths on how to manage their energy and energy field against outside interference and get more in touch with their emotions. How to set boundaries without feeling guilty or upsetting others by setting parameters to include time out for self and self healing/recharging time. Meditation techniques and other useful tools for managing and maintaining self awareness to help alleviate senses of overwhelm often experienced by empaths. Overall, lots of interesting and useful information for anyone looking for tools to help manage their self awareness and overall wellbeing.

Excellent book! I listened to this one quickly, but I’ll be coming back to both the physical copy and the audiobook to take notes and do the meditations/exercises. Great quick description of empaths. I felt very validated. Feeling inspired and more connected to who I’m meant to be. ✨
