Being a business owner is not for the faint of heart. It takes a firm resolve, the ability to persevere and pivot during challenging times, the humility to admit mistakes, and empathy for the people around you. Understanding who you are is critical to that journey.
In Broken to Better , Michael Kurland candidly shares every step of his own entrepreneurial odyssey—selling everything he owned, driving across the country to launch his new business, and ultimately building a purpose-driven culture that aligns purpose with profit.
Along the way, Kurland distills a lifetime of experience down to its purest essence. From key principles of organizational strength to the secrets of profitability and growth, Broken to Better offers up all his triumphs and mistakes in the same spirit of perseverance, fearlessness, empathy, and gratitude.
Although Kurland humbly claims he did “whatever it took to avoid failing,” the truth shines through on every page—he did whatever it took to Be Better.

This book was Stevo's Business Book of the Week for the week of 8/28, as selected by Stevo's Book Reviews on the Internet and Stevo's Novel Ideas. Kurland offers up his triumphs and mistakes in the spirit of perseverance, fearlessness, empathy, and gratitude.
In his thirties, Michael Kurland had achieved all the right things: a BA from the University of Lynchburg, a good job, marriage. But the phrase "Be Better" kept echoing in the back of his mind. He answered it with lifestyle changes. They helped, but they weren't the answer. As he grew stronger in body and mind, he finally understood that he needed a better career.
Wanting to start his own company, Kurland drove from New York to California and started a facilities management company named Branded Group with "Be Better" as his guiding mantra, not for just himself but also for his co-workers, clients, and community.
In "Broken to Better," Kurland tells his story of success in 13 chapters, each with a theme, such as "Be Purposeful," "Be Engaging," and "Be Inspiring." Each chapter tells a story of a challenge that was met, most importantly, by using a life lesson learned early-on and another described in the first chapter: Knowing Yourself and Being Connected. In other words, to not fail in Life and Leadership, you must be authentic, kind, compassionate, polite, respectful, and a great listener. And then use those traits to build a network that can help you Be Better. This is the basis for everything else.
There are many "Be a Better Manager" books out there, but there are never enough good ones that are simultaneously inspiring and full of things we can do right now, without making a cross-country journey. Read this book and Be Better for doing so.
