Read the Dutch translation in 1994 on the island of Curaçao, where I lived at the time. It was a gift from a visiting friend. I read as much Caribbean and South American novels as I could obtain in those years. Surprisingly, Dutch novels on Caribbean topics were rather hard to find then.
