About the author

Hella S. Haasse (1918 - 2011) was born in Batavia, modern-day Jakarta. She moved to the Netherlands after secondary school. In 1945 she debuted with a collection of poems, entitled Stroomversnelling (Momentum). She made her name three years later with the novella given out to mark the Dutch Book Week, Oeroeg (The Black Lake, 1948). As with much of her work, this tale of the friendship between a Dutch and an Indonesian boy has gained the status of a classic in the Netherlands. Titles such as Het woud der verwachting (In a Dark Wood Wandering, 1949), Een nieuwer testament (Threshold of Fire, 1966) and Mevrouw Bentinck of Onverenigbaarheid van karakter (Mrs Bentinck or Irreconcilable in Character, 1978) have been greatly enjoyed by several generations.

''The old world is closing; the world I have known, it is time for me to go....''

Het is moeilijk om het gevoel uit te leggen wat iemand krijgt bij het lezen van de brieven van koningin Sophie, brieven waarvan Sophie nooit wilde dat een ander dan Lady Malet ze las. Een kijkje achter de schermen zou je het misschien kunnen noemen, maar tegelijk heeft Sophie zich nooit één met het decor gevoeld waar het lot haar in plaatste.

Als lezer krijg je in ieder geval een uitstekend beeld van Sophie, een nog steeds enigszins onbegrepen intellectuele koningin, en de persoonlijke intriges van figuren in de 19e eeuw. Wat Sophie zo speciaal maakt, denk ik, is het feit dat ze zich scherp besefte dat ze met één voet in de oude wereld stond en met de andere voet in de nieuwe vormende wereld.

Soms is het wel lastig om alle namen bij te houden die Sophie noemt in haar brieven, maar meestal staat een persoon niet op zichzelf en komt hij/zij vaker langs. De mensen binnen de (aristocratische) toplaag kende elkaar immers meestal goed.

Een serieuze aanrader voor eenieder die inzicht wil krijgen in de gang van zaken in de 19e eeuw en in het ietwat hectische persoonlijke leven van koningin Sophie.

Liz: "All they do is bitch, bitch, bitch! I'd have left every one of them, too!"

For obvious reasons this line from Gilmore Girls came to mind constantly while reading the excerpts from Queen Sophie of the Netherlands' letters; yes, I am fully aware I chose willingly to do this to myself: she had a depressive life, and perhaps I was naïve to think she might have had some degree of happiness while living here but I was wrong, she did not.
She was by constitution a fatalist, and got worse after marrying King William III. And yes, it was going to get even worse: her mother-in-law, also her maternal aunt, hated her from the beginning because she had felt as much for Sophie's mother, her own sister. The marriage was a disaster, if at least in dynastic term it proved fruitful, 3 princes were born... that died before their father so she also failed there too. She was to bury one of them during her own lifetime.

As for the Netherlands she does not have anything nice to say about them, or her Dutch subjetcts but for their skills at ice skating, that is it: she hated the customs, the weather, and was sometimes, half-consciously, wishing the dykes would break so everybody would die, herself included. Yes, it was that bad.

I pity poor Lady Mallet every time she opened the envelopes since it never varied from a constant deluge of complaints, self loathing, and full on first class bitchiness.

But then again, we are talking about the woman who chose to be buried in her wedding dress, because, in her own view, her life had ended on the day she married.

Ik vond het een interessant boek en heb respect gekregen voor deze tragische koningin. Naast haar leven aan het hof en haar persoonlijke besognes, krijg je een beeld van de de tijdgeest en politieke verwikkelingen in de 19e eeuw. Uit haar opvattingen over de politiek en met name ontwikkelingen in Pruisen merk je ook dat zij een goed inzicht had. Het was een intelligente vrouw.
