Bernhard Grzimek was the director of the Frankfurt zoo in Germany as well as a tv host and documentary film maker. He is Germany’s answer to America’s Marlin Perkins. In, No Room for Wild Animals, you will learn about the wild animals of Africa, as well as the people. In particular, the region of Central Africa, the Congo. He travels, alongside his son, in a truck, through treacherous paths, from one area to another. They almost encounter more danger from their broken down truck than they do with the animals! His son, at one point, while sitting in the truck, gets hit by another truck! Not all the chapters deal with their adventures. The author often shares stories from people he meets. Often, a brief folk tale is thrown in for good measure. Read about elephants, hippo’s, okapi’s, and rhino’s, among others. The 2 daring men risk their lives taking photos of the dangerous animals up close. Read about the deadly diseases, the Pygmies, cannibalism, living conditions and a little history. Mr Grzimek has some unkind words for African safari hunters. The book is an easy read and one wonders how the author had time to write it, as he had multiple jobs going on! One also wonders why not much is said about his son, who is with him every step of the way. Yes, Michael knows how to fix things. That much we know. Maybe his son made a deal with his Dad to say as little about him as possible? It also would have been nice to have an index. There was a lot of name dropping! B&W photos and maps are included. The cover and paper are very good quality, 1957 1st edition. Maybe after reading this, take a look at Michael Crichton’s 1980 novel, Congo.
