Wisdom From Proverbs: For My Children And Grandchildren

Rate this book
Chuck Brooks was raised by a single mom in the "hood" of Baltimore City, Maryland. His mom introduced him to stories found in the Bible, which began to open in his heart a curiosity to the God who "created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). He trusted the Lord at the age of eighteen, married Debbie at the age of twenty-two, and answered the Lord's call to preach at twenty-four. Over time, the Bible began to renew his mind, and in his mid-thirties, he answered the call to plant a church in Baltimore. Chuck and Debbie have eight children, and most were homeschooled over a period of thirty years. This devotional book based on the thirty-one chapters of Proverbs started as a "legacy gift" to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. But the more Chuck's family and friends read its manuscript, the more encouragement he received to make it available for all to read and be daily encouraged by the wisdom found in its pages.

wow..... i find this book to be a heartfelt devotional built around 31 readings, each drawing lessons from a chapter of Proverbs. the aim is clear, to pass biblical wisdom to the next generation and encourage readers to apply Scripture to the decisions they make every day.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its personal touch. Brooks draws on his own experiences, family relationships, mistakes, and observations to bring the lessons to life. Some of these stories give the advice a sense of lived experience rather than making it feel like an abstract Bible study. The recurring “Think About It” questions and closing prayers also make the book practical for individual reflection or family discussion. I particularly appreciated Brooks’ explanation that Proverbs offers general principles for living rather than guarantees that life will always turn out a certain way. That distinction provides useful context for readers who might otherwise interpret every proverb as a promise. His emphasis on wisdom, integrity, self-control, diligence, humility, and faithful relationships gives the book a consistent purpose, while the final chapter’s tribute to his mother and wife adds a touching, personal note.

The author explains that its central purpose is to help readers gain and apply godly wisdom to everyday decisions. He emphasizes that biblical wisdom begins with reverence for God and contrasts it with worldly wisdom. Through personal stories, Scripture, reflections, questions, and prayers, Brooks explores themes including wise choices, avoiding harmful relationships, sexual purity, diligence, truthful speech, patience, family life, discipline, humility, justice, friendship, contentment, and spiritual growth. He encourages readers to study one chapter of Proverbs each day, meditate on its teachings, and apply them practically. The book is written especially for his children and grandchildren, with the broader goal of encouraging readers to live according to God’s Word.

Wisdom From Proverbs For My Children & Grandchildren is a thoughtful and deeply personal devotional that feels like sitting down with a father or grandfather who genuinely wants to pass on the lessons he has learned in life. Chuck Brooks combines Scripture with personal experiences, mistakes, warnings, and practical advice, which makes the message feel much more relatable. I loved how the book connects the wisdom of Proverbs to everyday choices involving family, friendships, work, relationships, discipline, and faith. It isn’t really a “quick five-minute devotional”; it encourages you to slow down, reflect, and actually apply what you’re reading. Some of the stories are especially powerful because they show how these lessons have played out in real life. Overall, it’s a sincere book about faith, wisdom, and the responsibility of passing those values on to the next generation.

I really loved the heart behind this devotional. I love that it began as a family gift for the author’s children and grandchildren and it also grew into something that is meant to encourage others as well. The focus on the wisdom found throughout Proverbs makes it a loving book for daily reflections. His personal story and journey of faith also add a spiritual touch. This is a great devotional for people that are looking for encouragement, wisdom, and a stronger connection to God in their everyday life. It also helps at the bottom of each devotional an explanation to better understand it. I will be using this book everyday. I really liked the ones from Day 10 and Day 24 those spoke volumes to me.

31 days spent in wise words from the Proverbs! Each proverb is a principle of truth. It stands on its own merit. It is sound advice for a Godly life. As Solomon tells us, it is instruction in righteousness, justice, and equity.

Each daily reading may vary in length a bit, but will only take a few moments of time to read. Perfect to supplement with your own daily Bible reading and prayer time.

I was interested in reading this book because it is from a pastor's point of view, someone who I'm sure has spent much time in God's Word, and understands much more about it than I do. He has an easy to understand tone, and he shared sound insight of the Word.
