One million babies born in the U.S. each year suffer from colic, and yet until now, colic has been only a footnote in baby care books. Defined as constant, unpredictable and inconsolable crying, parents dealing with colic are desperate for solutions. Now there's help. Mental health professional Tonja Krautter, having been through the ordeal of raising a baby with colic, offers parents a complete blueprint for coping, -- how to determine what may be causing your baby's colic -- successful strategies for soothing the baby, and what to do when you can't -- dealing with the emotional impact of colic on the rest of the family -- hope for getting to the other side of the colic experience
This book talks about reflux and other factors that make babies cry. It's main focus is overstimulated, hard to soothe babies and calming them by Havey Karp's 'happiest baby on the block' techniques for long enough to make a difference.
The author also includes info on postpartum depression and colic's effect on the whole family. Good if your child's screaming is caused by over-stimulation. Otherwise, not as great.
Now on my 2nd colicky baby, this book didn't teach me much about techniques to deal with the crying(which are essentially Happiest Baby on the Block stuff) but it was cathartic to read other people's experiences with colic. Sometimes it's good just not to feel alone when going through an isolating experience.
