While so-called "dog whisperers" like Cesar Millan are still clinging to brutal methods like choke collars, shock collars (which are forbidden in Germany) and the idea that people should dominate their dogs, Martin Rütter has done a whole lot in recent years to make clear that the only morally responsible way to train social animals is to build a relationship with them that is marked by mutual trust and respect.

In this book, Rütter tackles somewhat classical problems like excessive barking, pulling on the leash, stealing food, aggression against other dogs and more. In order to teach a dog the kind of behavior that is seen as preferable by humans, Rütter points out that the first step should be to realize what generally motivates dogs to show a certain behavior and to figure out what particular aspects might influence individual dogs according to breed and former history. Rütter then explains how to train the dog in a way that is easily understood from a canine point of view depending on the specific reasons for the dog`s initial behavior. In other words: Rütter first tries to find the cause for a certain behavior before starting to act and refrains from just treating the symptoms. His training methods rely on motivation, positive reinforcement and the building of trust.

My dog is a typical terrier and when I first got him, he was the wildest puppy in the whole training center for dogs we attended. The trainer lectured me how it was a bad choice to go for a male terrier as a first dog and that he was so wild I should have him castrated as soon as possible in order to calm him down. This trainer was so wrong. Instead of surgery, I opted for training my dog and teaching him by using Rütter´s methods - no domination, no violence, no aggression. It worked. All that Cesar Millan- and castration-without-medical-indication nonsense is cruel and completely pointless.
