When a camping trip goes terribly wrong, young Joey Winter finds himself seriously injured, abandoned by his mother and her friend, and in the care of dangerous strangers. As he recovers, he learns he?s in even more danger than he ever imagined, and still his mother has not come to get him so, when the opportunity arises to escape, Joey takes it. With three companions, one the woman who?d tried to kill him already and no doubt would try again, Joey is determined to survive and to go home.
When a camping trip is struck by an earthquake, fourteen year old Joey Winter is catapulted into a completely different reality; a divided and unequal society where a small percentage hold the power and wealth. In an unfair society some of those with all the advantages sometimes prey on others. That’s foreign to Joey, who’s unable to remain silent when he witnesses a small incident of that nature. As a result a resistance movement is sparked which rapidly gathers strength.
The book grabs your attention from the first page and quickly becomes impossible to put down. With a small nod to John Wyndham, it’s a mix of dystopian fantasy and adventure. The subtle use of humour, well drawn characters and an unpredictable plot hold your attention to the very last page. And on the last page is an impossible to predict massive final twist, which leaves the reader wanting more.
I loved this book; it's one of those rare reads where you're thinking about the characters when you're not reading it. Definitely recommended....& please hurry up with the nest one!
Woo what a great read this book was . It took me on the most interesting journey from the very first page to the page , I kept wanting to read on and on , every page was so exciting with the fantastic adventure of a very young teenage boy who was seperated from his Mother, lost in a different world full of many dangers ,he showed amazing courage and determination to return home again to his beloved mother. This book kept me reading through the night ,I was unable to put it down , the storyline kept me interested, it was at times nail biting, scary, frightening also very gripping ... I can't wait to read the next book Ren'ee writes as i'm sure this very brave young man has far more adventures to come ,.. EXCELLENT READING , Thanks for such a good book to read .From Robyn Terry
'Reveille' is a cracker of a read. The first in a series, the plot caught my interest and attention from the beginning, and held it throughout. The arc of the story follows the rules of 'the hero's journey', taking our young protagonist on an adventure through a very unfamiliar New Zealand landscape, some 600 years in the future.
Although positioned as suitable for adult readers, I believe many young adults would enjoy this novel and identify with our young hero as he struggles with the complexities of the society around him.
