Imprescindible.
Magnificent research work that rigorously analyzes the career of one of the key American directors to understand fantastic cinema in the eighties. An unavoidable reference of cultural film studies both in Spain and in the Anglo-Saxon sphere.
Amazing thorough, high-detailed book about director Joe Dante's cinematographic career, evolution, story construction process, motivations and themes, all of it told through a chronologically organized deep analysis that dissects not only his creative journey, but also his environment, stablishing a meta language where all Dante's references, as well as the artistic and cultural movements that surrounded his life and cinema, come together to depict a beautiful tale about how to push forward the limits of reality.
The author, Alvaro Pita, explores Dante's art from a multidimensional perspective, approaching his inspirations and influences first in order to tell the story of how he became the director we know. I must say that I was not super familiar at first with the role of Dante but as diving deeper into his path's narration, rich in anecdotes, behind-the-scenes amazing data, interesting explanations and details about the film making process -with a thorough, curated approach to the abundant SPFX present in most of his films, from the Gremlins creation and movement process, to the many different costumes, props and equipment that made Joe Dante's filmography notorious and well known-, this is a book for all of you who cannot get enough of a well written book about movies and the art beyond their conception.
By reading this book, I got to learn so many things about the hidden side of the movies' production, the dealings with the majors and industry deals, as well as incredible references as getting to know William Castle, a producer, filmmaker, writer and artist who went one step forward than his contemporaries by providing their audiences with an extra experience, known as his "gimmicks", that fascinated Dante and meant a stepping stone in his love for the 3d and the beyond the limits experience. Definitely, a total must read!
