SUPERMOUSE AND THE VOLCANO OF DOOM is a charming, superhero-style read with plenty of cheese. Supermouse stays busy fighting crime and saving the day around Mouseopolis, but he soon realizes that there is just too much for him to do on his own. He requests help from other superheroes with the intent of forming a squad, but he's not sure how much their powers will actually help. However, with a fondue volcano of cheese about to explode, Supermouse learns that their powers and willingness to help are sure to save the day!

What I loved: This is such a fun, light-hearted, and cute superhero story that will work well for elementary school aged readers. There are a lot of jokes and comical moments that allow caregivers to share in the laughs as they read along with young ones. With the older age target, the book manages to include clever flaps to lift and peek-throughs that seem more elegant and age appropriate, such as double flaps, a newspaper to read, and more. This makes the story feel more interactive along the way and is such a fun style.

The story itself is great with plenty to enjoy, including what feels relatively low stakes in a volcano of cheese about to explode. The messaging around not underestimating others, accepting help, working together, and playing to your own strengths will resonate with this age group, who may also appreciate the superhero angle. The illustrations are detailed, lush, and colorful, making for a book that is truly fun to read and feels like an early comic book. The text is clear and easy to read throughout, making this a good one for caregivers to read aloud and/or confident independent readers (beyond early reading stages) to read alone.

Final verdict: SUPERMOUSE AND THE VOLCANO OF DOOM is a charming and silly picture book about an unlikely band of superheroes who save the day from fondue. Clever use of lift-the-flaps and peek-throughs elevate this colorful story for elementary school aged readers.

Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

Supermouse patrols through Mouseopolis, stopping bad guys and saving the day! But there are so many crimes and accidents and dangers that Supermouse can't handle it all. There is just too much daring-do to do! He begins to interview some possible superheroes to join him in the newly-created League of Remarkable Rodents. At first, he is not sure if their particular talents will be useful in the crime-fighting business, but they quickly prove their worth when a massive fondue cheese volcano begins to erupt right outside the city!

This is such a cool book! There are tons of flaps to lift and peek under, and die-cut holes in the pages to peek through. I love that some of the flaps are actually two little pages. One of the flaps is actually a newspaper that Supermouse is reading. It's so clever and fun!

The writing is adorable and so much fun to read out loud because there is a LOT of alliteration! My favorite part was when "He Fought Fearlessly to Fend off the Flow of the Fiery Fondue." haha!

I love the cute illustrations! There are lots of details in the background and mouse characters doing funny little things in the back of each scene. The art style is colorful, and I really like the designs for each of the superhero characters!

Mouseopolis is plagued by increasing crime in the streets and a dangerous volcano [Mount Fondue] threatening to erupt. It's all too much for one heroic mouse named Peter Parmesan--love that name!--who is actually the alter ego for Supermouse. But Supermouse can't handle all this alone, and he invites others to join him as part of the League of Remarkable Rodents. Filled with tasty tidbits, pun-filled references to cheesy bits, and action on every page, this is one title that won't leave readers bored or unentertained. If it's not the characters and storyline, it will be the pages that allow readers to peek into other pages, the flaps to lift, and the entire design of the book. Plus, with phrases such as "a molten mass of melted cheese" (unpaged), it's just so much fun to read aloud. Don't overthink this one; just sink into its humorous delights, preferably with a toasted cheese sandwich within reach, and enjoy the cleverness of the cartoonlike artwork, the plot, and the heroism of this unlikely hero.

This is a hilarious and fun comic-book style adventure in a picture book format for young children. Not only is the comic book style engaging and unique for a picture book, this also includes lift-the-flap elements. There is a lot to enjoy on each page and the narrative keeps the story moving. I was a little afraid at first all the design elements would feel to busy and distracting, but my kids really enjoyed each page and I felt that they were interacting with the story as we read along. This is one to revisit, as well, as there are lots of little pieces to the adventure to pick up on in additional read-throughs. It's really fun and perfect for a picture book age group!

First of all, the cover and title of this book is fantastic (although I wouldn't mind a volcano of cheese). And it is also a lift-the-flap book for bigger kids, which my five-year-old will tell you is hard to find. And it has superheros, Batman references, and silliness. A real win for bigger kids looking for something fun as they are learning to read.
