Pity about this one. The plot is convoluted and overblown, its political slant sitting uneasily in this context; the characters are spoilt people, fairly charmless; the villain in 'superbly cut tweeds' totally unconvincing; the narrative choked by details of luxury food, clothes and interior design (always a hazard in MM's work), and stalled by endless West End London place-dropping. Macmullen could and did write better books than this farrago.
