This best-selling textbook is unique because of its focus on the political side of bureaucracy. Designed to present bureaucracy as a political institution, this book provides coverage of the controls on bureaucracy and how bureaucracy makes policy.
I don't like this book, but I can understand its usefulness in a classroom setting. It was very repetitive and felt as if it could have been condensed by at least another 50 or so pages.
This book is dense, but it is a good intro to public bureaucracy. While this book is the center of a course I'm involved in, I would recommend it in concert with another book, perhaps one that highlights the actual human experience, personal stories, of working in bureaucracy.
"Very good introduction on bureaucracy, both as an institution and as a policymaking force. Good to assess some of the elements that characterize bureaucracy."
