Vigilante killers and dismembered corpses are all in a day's work for Houston Detective Quetzel Cazares. But when she rescues a hungry kitten at a particularly gruesome crime scene, her caseload takes a turn for the bizarre. Five short detective stories, served with a side of supernatural, take readers on an expedition into the darker side of human nature.
I started this book late last night and could not put it down. There are only forty or so pages in this compilation of short stories that revolve about the homicide detective, Quetzel Cazares, but each word on each page left me wanting more. A bit of horror, a bit of the supernatural, some shape shifters and one detective trying to solve murders leads to a very interesting read. There is a Monster-O-Pedia at the end of the book to explain what some of the characters were and some were new to me while others I had met in books read before. I am off to find out if this author has written other books and just what they may be. I have to say that as a freebie won through LibraryThing I am grateful I was a winner as I thoroughly enjoyed these stories.
I Am Never Moving to Houston (Audiobook) In addition to not wanting to move to Houston, I would definitely not go into law enforcement there or listen to this story late at night while it is stormy or windy outside. It has several "EEK" & jump worthy scenes.
It took me a bit to wrap my brain around the fact that most of the stories were not related except for having Houston's Detective Quetzel Cazares at the scene, and oh yes, the cat pops up a few times (snicker).
I really, really liked the Monster-O-Pedia at the end of the book. Some of the critters listed were new to me and I liked the brief history & description of all of them.

I liked "Rescue" although at the beginning I had to start over a few times. I had a hard time following the story. After about a half hour it got better. It was still a little sloppy in places as well as having some gruesome details I could have lived without.
I think A.B. Richards is a pretty creative writer and Andrew Jones did a good job narrating the story. I'd like to hear him in other settings.

I had received this book from the LibraryThing giveaway in exchange for an honest review.
This is a collection of short stories. The common factor between this stories is a detective and a cat. There are certain sections which should not be read by those with a weak heart.
The stories were different from what I have read till date. Some stories were nice while others I felt could have been developed better. Overall it was a decent read.
