Emily was so excited to buy the mercantile when she inherited a large sum of money from her grandmother because she wanted to spend more time with Jeremiah. Jeremiah had intended to buy the mercantile, so he had something to offer Emily before asking to court her. The rumors of others and overhearing conversations led to trouble. Ultimately, the two opened opposing stores right across the street from each other.
Emily wanted independence and a woman's right to vote. Jeremiah's mother was the head of the Women's Christian League and apposed everything Emily desired. But when a blizzard hit Harper, Kansas, the two became trapped in Jeremiah's store for days, and the expectation of the community is marriage.
Even though they care for each other, their marriage is strained by opposing views. When a horrific, life-altering disaster hits the town of Harper, Jeremiah and Emily find their true God honoring purpose and a love they've each carried for one another since childhood.
This was a story that covered a sensitive subject; abuse. But, more than that, it covers God's desire for us. There are several great messages within this story. I really enjoyed it for the messages it imparted.
This book for me was somewhat like Tarah's Lessons; only opposite. In Tarah Lessons, Anthony got on my nerves; in this book, it was Emily. She was so focused on making it on her own, and being special, that she almost lost the one thing she most wanted. Jeremiah. Surprisingly enough, I was also against the woman's suffrage. I was also disappointed that we didn't see much from the other St Johns in this book. But, it was still a good book. Sad that it was the last and final book in the series.
Great final book in this series.I have loved this book and series. It was like getting a bunch of new friends.I could just pick up a book and jump right in.This was a sweet and loving story with a little of the sufregist movement thrown in.Plenty ofovetoo!
