I loved reading the first one and jumped at the chance to read this one. This one did not disappoint. This one was just as enjoyable as the first. The tempo was right on, and the length of the book was not a bother. This held my interest from beginning to end, and I am looking forward to more!
In this story, Abbie is trying to prove she is a good guardian to Nica and Jimi to gain over custody. The chief advises her to stay out of trouble, but it is hard to do when another Grimm related problem requires her attention. I am happy to see how Abbie is more fleshed out in this one. She feels more well-rounded, and I connected with her in this one more than the first book. I cannot wait to read more about her and her journey as a Grimm.
The rest of the characters felt just as well written as they were in the first book. Jimi has gotten closer to Abbie, but Nica has taken an awkward turn that has gotten Abbie concerned. We learn a little more about our Standard Bearers and how they grow as a team. I cannot wait to see where their journey goes.
The way the author intertwines paranormal and mystery sleuth genre is well done. I enjoy how well balanced the two are in this story. They feel well connected and natural. What I also enjoy is the theme of family. In these two books, family is more than just blood relation. Family is what you make and who you make it with.
I cannot wait to get into book 3. This is a series I will continue to follow. It is fun and well written, and I cannot wait to read more adventures from the Standard Bearers.
I recommend this to anyone who likes to read series, paranormal, mystery, and Grimms.
*I received an ARC from Booksprout, and this is my honest opinion.

I really enjoy the books in this series!! I'm glad there's going to be 8!
In this story, Abbie learns more about the cat that has been following the Standard Bearers around and she has to deal with a rather odious councilman who doesn't want Abbie's adoption of Nica and Jimi to succeed.
Abbie is such a wonderful guardian to her kids. I love how she supports them and makes them be a part of the group!
She tries to balance her Grimm/Standard Bearer duties and find full time employment by the time of her next family court appointment.
I also enjoy the diversity of the cast and the inclusion of different mythologies and worlds.
It's a clean story (with some violence because there's murder, but not gratuitous) with no/minimal swearing taking place in Britain.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Fans of Death Takes a Detour, rejoice : Grimm Abbie and her Standard Bearers are back!
But while Death Takes a Detour ended in an “All's Well that ends Well”, especially with Abbie getting temporary custody of Jimi and Nica, our favourite Grimm and former EMT soon finds herself between a rock and a hard place in Death Shifts Gears.
The 'Gist'
As said, Abbie has gotten temporary custody of Jimi and Nica and is loving the idea of being a mother, living in the cottage at St. Michaels Church & Cemetery. But while she's overjoyed to have them in her life, and tries her best to adhere to all the court's rulings and wishes in the hopes of making temporary into permanent, less fun consequences come a-knocking.
Having signed off on her guardianship the handsome Chief and Detective- Inspector Callum had already warned her they can't get involved even though they're both interested. In this part of her story Abbie's secret private life quickly throws an extra wrench in her possible romantic life with the possibility of even ruining their friendship and trust.
On top of that Abbie is struggling financially, trying to get and then juggle three part-time jobs to fulfill one of the more important terms of her custody agreement. If that isn't enough, she and the kids find themselves under the scrutiny of a local, but powerful racist politician.
Our Grimm needs to act the perfect mother even more, which becomes difficult when a new supernatural murder mystery is thrown into her lap. With her adoption on the line and the kids' future at stake the Standard Bearers - one special feline is finally revealed- still decide to dive into the obvious supernatural case. Especially when it becomes apparent one of their own is involved and a life can be saved.
Abbie will have to navigate the waters extra carefully since she finds out during her supe sleuthing there are more powers out to get her than just the councilman. Or is hé more than he seems?
Vroom, vroom: victory!
While I still haven't figured out what the first book's title referred to, Death Shift Gears becomes clear in the first few pages. Youssef, Abbie's brother Bran's boss is having memory lapses every single time he uses a car he bought for a family member. And that car will play an intricate part in the solving of their case.
My issues with book 1 in the Outside the Circle Series were a too simple plot and a very slow build up, giving us little time for the action. But I still saw a lot of potential and had a feeling that books to come would get higher ratings from me by solving those issues. I guess I can join the Standard Bearers as their resident psychic, because Book 2, Death Shift Gears, does exactly that. With a wink to our title and story: Shereen Vedam shifted to a higher gear and races this book to a victory.
The strength of the Outside the Circle books is the strong family connection and focus on togetherness, friendship. That luckily hasn't changed one bit. It is that warmth and loyalty between people that really makes these books work for a larger audience - and what draws you in. In these times we can all use examples of how it should be, right? Vedam again shows us that and the bonds within the circle are deepening.
Our ghostly Earl of Ashford Robert is a great mentor and friend to everyone once more, and even though Abbie is our main character, I can't help but like him the most. (If you've taken the chance to read the prequel to this series you also know how he was as a living, breathing gentleman and how his wife came into his life. With that particular murder mystery also still being a part of the future books I definitely recommend getting your hands on this romance novella.)
The kids remain adorable, their relationship with Abbie equally so, and slowly they show us more of their abilities. I really like how seven completely different people can make such a great team. I guess when an insecure and traumatised Grimm, a cranky witch, a nerdy and sweet IT wizard, two lost supernatural kids coming into their powers, a shifter and a ghost decide to band together, the number seven truly leads to magic.
Pacing and Plot
Shereen Vedam is still on a roll in book 2 when it comes to originality. I particularly like the Grimm tools and adaptation of known supernaturals, but above all how she takes inspiration from well- known fairy tales and turns them upside down. In Death Shift Gears you might at one point think you've figured out the 'supe' story...and then you haven't.
And that is exactly why this second book keeps the promise I saw in the first. Where I had issues with the pacing and plot in Death Takes a Detour I have none with Death Shift Gears. Storyline, fairytales and adventures... they all come together in interesting ways with unexpected turns. It is never too slow or too much either. The book is still relatively short for an Urban Fantasy title - in this regard it's more a cozy mystery, but I really think this is with its intended - also much younger - audience in mind. You can see that too in the fact bad things happen without any gruesome details to go with it.
As far as other improvements go: the murder mystery remained a true mystery until the end, and what's more: Vedam managed to let me turn the last page and have me think “Wait! No, don't end! I need to know if...”
That particular want pertains to the mysterious big bad we saw introduced in this title and are sure to hear back from. Smart, because now I can't wait for book 3. Thank Kali this author doesn't have years between series titles!
Conclusion
The rating is clear: with a book that worked so well on so many levels I can only give a big fat four stars, with a 8.75 on my personal scale of 1-10. I'm not someone who easily hands out 4 and 5 stars, so this obviously means I'm enthusiastic to the point of recommendation. Death Shift Gears is a testament to Shereen Vedam's originality and will leave you with a smile on your face and adrenaline running through your body, eager for the next Grimm adventure. I'm sure early teens up till adults who are a fan of supernatural mysteries and cozier versions of Urban Fantasy will enjoy this book and read it in one go.

Finishing this second book makes me so glad I took the plunge and started reading this author. Abbie is trying to make it work as the guardian to two children while still being true to their roles as Standard Bearers. In this latest, she finds out more about Mr. Cat, that two people have a grudge against her for some reason, and she might have a new member of her team. I quite enjoyed this book, and I’m really glad there will be more in the series. This is a well-written, clean, very British, urban fantasy with some very interesting characters and an engaging plot. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Death Shifts Gears is the second book in this series by Shereen Vedam. It can be read as a stand alone book but I suggest reading the first book in the series before this one as it gives you more detailed background of the characters in this book. This book picks up where book one left off with Abbie trying to get permanent custody of Jimi and Nica. While trying to find full time work as a condition of the courts, Abbie and the Standard Bearers gang come across another supernatural mystery to be solved. This book is a fast read Paranormal mystery and I could not put it down! The characters in this book are intriguing. In this book we find out who Mr Cat, the siamese cat who hangs around the group, really is. It also introduces a supernatural sports car along with Giants, a spelled dog and the mention of an Immortal who may or may not be after Abbie. This series is fantastic and I can't wait to read the next books in this 8 book series!

Our heroine is facing challenges both mundane and magical. Finding the right balance is hard, but she is going to have to figure it out soon or she will lose everything. And that is not an outcome she is willing to contemplate.
This is book two the series. While this does build on the previous story, it does pretty well as a standalone. The essentials are covered early on.
This is an urban fantasy story with ghosts, demons and other critters. The story is well written, easy to read and very engaging. I liked our heroine right from the start and the more I learned, the more I liked her. The story itself moves at a solid pace, drawing you in right at the start and never letting go. There is plenty of action, mystery and intrigue so that you are never quite sure what it coming next. Overall, it all blends into a fun story that leaves you anxious for more. Bring on the next book, please.
Highly recommended.

Abbie’s new life as a Grimm continues when her brother tells her about his boss and having missing time episodes. When they see a driverless car speeding down the road they follow and find a body. It’s the boss’s sister and the standard bearers have a new case to solve. Complicating matters is the distance between Abbie and Nica. Though she is the children’s legal guardian Nica seems to grow more distant by the day, Jimi is adjusting much better. Also Constable Ducky keeps appearing wherever Abbie is even if he’s not supposed to be there, and to top it all off there’s a seriously suspicious councilman determined to deport Nica and Jimi. Abbie and the crew have their hands full with this case.
I love the seamless blend of magical, spiritual and mystery. The standard bearers are growing stronger and closer as the dangers they face intensify. It’s just a fun book to read!.

I really enjoy this author's work as a paranormal historical romance writer, but I am impressed by how well her writing translates into the paranormal cozy mystery genre. This has all the charm of her romances with the village feel of Miss Marple's home, the hapless stumbling into troubling situations of Miss Seeton and the youthful enthusiasm of Lady Osbaldestone's grandchildren. This has all the grit and mystery of clean adult urban fantasy and without being so adult that young adult readers cannot enjoy it. I definitely recommend this to fans of Joynell Schultz as well as fans of the creators of Miss Marple, Miss Seeton and Lady Osbaldestone.

Death Shifts Gears . . .
Abbie Grimshaw has to prove herself an acceptable guardian for two young orphans. She has temporary custody of Jimi and Nica. Now they are preparing for a custody hearing, even though a councilman doesn't want Abbie's adoption of Nica and Jimi to be successful. But Abbie is a perfect, loving guardian to the kids. But her situation is made more difficult as she balances her duties while trying to get full time work to fulfill the requirements for her keeping the children.
In the meantime, Abbie is asked to find out what got her friend’s sister killed. Many things depend on her solving this mystery or she could end up losing everything.

some families are built using unexpected components under difficult or challenging conditions.
this is that kind if family. with gifted children, who have been lost or separated from blood kin; with adult supes, with cursed shifters and fae, with well intentioned and greedy arrangements with high ranking fae; with blood and greed and death - and with those who would sacrifice to protect or aid others in need.
intense drama, action and supernatural themed drama linking the safety and interests of realms and peoples.

Rcvd an advanced reader copy from BookSirens for giving my two cents. We met Abbie previously whom is a Grimm and became guardian of 2 children. Now in this book Abbie is trying to find out who is behind Yousefs sisters death and to help those in need...especially a Fae car whose name is Shahay. What a complication indeed. There are more questions thsn answers especially when a dog is inatructed to kill by by his Master...butbwho is thr master and how is it related to Yousefs sisters death? Abbie along with the help of her friends try to put the pieces of the puzzle together before its too late.

After reading the first book I was expecting this one to be intriguing and I was not disappointed. The characters are the same wonderful group of people with special abilities, a witch, an electrical wizard, a Grimm, a cat shifter, a child who can talk to Gods, a ghost, and a child who can talk to inanimate objects. Another mystical murder has occurred and one of our group is involved. A fast yellow Supra seems to be a major link in the case. Then there are the fairies... It is part of a series, but I think it could be read as a standalone. I loved this book! I think it should have 10 stars, but I can only give it 5. I highly recommend it.

I enjoyed this quick read and look forward to the next in the series. As a foster/adoption mom I get a little triggered everytime the main character leaves her charges with someone else.
I did love the interactions by the main character and her charges, not only the bonding process but the fact that the kids are magically powerful. Lots of gathering together of a support group.
The plot of the story was both hilarious as well as a bit horrifying. Can't even imagine everyone's faces during that last battle.

If you have not read the first book in this series, I suggest that you do that before reading this one. This book stands alone, but the first book fills in the background for this one.
I liked this book much more than the first. The kids and Abbie are all recovering from the deaths of loved ones when they are thrust into another murder mystery. Along with solving this they are gearing up for a custody hearing.
Life is never dull for Abbie!.

Abbie and the team are back and must solve another mystery. And this was a riot, both sad yet crazy. Besides solving the latest murder, Abbie working on getting her life in order but also doing what she must to make sure her new kids are recovering and learning to life again. New characters are introduced and a villain is here to stay with an unknown agenda. Just a great story that was entertaining and fun to read and hard to put down..

Really enjoyed this book. Abbie and her Standard Bearers must solve a murder and keep off councilman’s Beckwith’s radar. She also must find a full time job before her next court meeting or she may lose Jimi and Nica. This was a good read with lots of fun parts in it. You have a possessed car who wants Abbie to figure out who killed her owner. You also find out who Mr. Cat is. I would recommend this book. I received an arc and the views and opinions are my own.

Another great Standard Bearers story.
Shereen Vedam expertly blends real world challenges with magical tools to spin an interesting story that's got a bit of romance, a lot of suspense, a guardian fighting to keep the kids she's respnsible, an sentient yellow sports car, some magic beans and assorted mages, witches, shifters, goddesses a Grimm, a giant and some fey folk.
A great read.

Abbie already has plenty of challenges, for she has newly become the temporary guardian for two young orphaned siblings (Nica and Jimi with hopes of adopting them), and now she has a murder mystery to solve as well. As well as a supernatural mystery, so plenty of adventure ahead of her. I enjoyed learning more about the characters and their skills, the adventures and mysteries they have and the variety of supernaturals. I liked how Abbie is trying her best for Nica and Jimi, and their relationship with each other. I look forward to their next adventure/mystery.

We FINALLY find out who our cat shifter is and get to learn more about life outside the circle. But, we're no closer to finding out who was responsible for the London bombing that resulted in Abbie returning home. I'm looking forward to the 3rd book in the series!

An amazing book that will intrigue you all the way to the end. A paranormal story with just the right amount of suspense and fabulous characters. Once it’s released there’s no reason not to read it. Loved it.

Loved the character growth in the second book. Amazing read. Never read anything about Grimm’s before. If you like witches paranormal creatures etc then you must read this series.

Good story with well done characters and just a touch of classic fairy tale flavor that makes it even richer.

Abbie has many things going on but she is trying to prove that she is a good guardian to Jimi and Nica. Trying to find a full time job, another murder Abby definitely has her hands full.
