All the physical characteristics of this book are good: color, paper, cover, and font. However, when it comes to the quality of the writing, the book becomes, for me, the worst book of 2020-2021. The book is not just bad, it is terrible.
From the very first page I realized that this book was written very, very poorly because the text is so lackluster that the mind just can't get hold of a single idea. The book is filled with absolutely empty text from beginning to end. There is not a single bright spot in it - just grayness. Yes, it is grayness. I often encounter books with ideas that I do not agree with, that seem deeply flawed, but this book is not of that kind because everything here, absolutely everything has a flat style. It is like legal documents or financial reports for corporate meetings, where the text is so boring and uninteresting that you need special skills to not only understand what is written but also to have the will to read it. Similar is the case with this book: the entire text is written in such a way that the reader is simply unable not only to remember the contents of the book but also to understand the author's ideas. By the way, the ideas themselves, which are described in the book, are not that complicated. In fact, it is a brief introduction to the basics of modern marketing. Nothing specific. And here, I even agree with other readers of this book that the book is very superficial. The main problem is not even the superficiality, but the presentation of the material, as if it were written for employees of companies who will never read this text. Pure formality, so to speak.
The second thing about the book is that throughout the time I was reading this book, I caught myself that this book is about modern marketing in general, not B2B marketing. Although the author occasionally emphasizes a B2B focus, everything in this book looks like it can be used in both B2B and B2C marketing. There are no unique topics in the book that are only relevant to B2B marketing. For example, the author mentions social networks as an important tool in marketing communications. It is doubtful that this tool is so important in B2B marketing that it is impossible not to mention it. After all, instead of listing all the modern and popular methods of communication - social networks, blogs, YouTube - one could devote more space to such topics as personal selling and seasonal exhibitions, which are used more often in B2B marketing. But no, the author says almost nothing about trade shows. As a result, we have a book that can be used in any kind of marketing (B2B/B2C). Two in one, so to speak.
One last thing. Again, I want to go back to the text itself. The whole text goes like this:
Business marketers can encounter numerous stumbling blocks in content creation; the main ones are: - Knowing how much content to create. Putting a cap or ceiling on content is difficult, particularly when there is a trend of increasing content and content consumption. Defining the volume comes down to understanding the buyers and their use of content across the buyer stages. - Lack of buy-in to the value-add of content. Having an organization not fully bought-in to the value of content can mean content is not created to the right scale or quality. - Knowing when to refresh. The timing of refreshing may be misunderstood; updating content too late may mean the business loses out on opportunities to engage. - Too many formats. With too many different content formats managing and sharing content can prove challenging; good content can get lost in the maze of poor content. - Content creation know-how. In-house technical knowledge for creating content could be lacking.
As you can see it is something like Wikipedia, but even Wikipedia has fewer definitions of the classifications of various marketing and business concepts. Here are continuous short definitions of a concept and what it, in turn, is subdivided into with an equally short definition.
An essential guide: buy it if you are involved in B2B marketing. OK, maybe the review should be a little longer, explaining about how this powerful little book provides a great overview about some of the latest models, processes and theories that engulf the world of B2B marketing. Its knowledge leaks over into other disciplines too.
For those who are new to B2B marketing or whose knowledge might be a little outdated, this is a goldmine of a resource. For the older hands, it is an aide memoire, as so many things are changing at an ever-faster speed and it can be difficult to keep up-to-speed with everything you should do. Treat this book as a bit of a yearly maintenance check for your knowledge, just as you may need to submit your car to!
High on detail, hyperbole is pushed to the curb. Maybe it can appear too curt for some readers, but it should not be a negative. Just the facts, offered up in compact chapters that are not an onerous read. If you need a detailed ‘how to’ on a given subject, and the references given are insufficient, you may need to consult another book or resource but you will still will have received a great introduction and taster of something you became hooked on. The reader is given a mix of practical knowledge, theory and case studies that will help you position your company’s marketing activities for the future.
You may think there is a pricing error when you come to buy the book – it really is that inexpensive – a steal for what you are getting and it does a lot more than what the title and description may promise if you let it or need it to. It can be something great for those who slept through or forgot their marketing classes.
