Shirley MacLaine is an actress, author, and former dancer. Known for her portrayals of quirky, strong-willed, and eccentric women, she has received numerous accolades over her seven-decade career, including an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, six Golden Globes, and a Lifetime Achievement Award. Apart from acting, MacLaine has written numerous books regarding the subjects of metaphysics, spirituality, and reincarnation, as well as a New York Times bestselling memoir, Out On a Limb.
I did not read all four of SM's books but I did read Don't Fall Off the Mountain and Out on a Limb. I think at the time I read them MacLaine was one of the first actors to write about her spiritual experiences. I lived in LA at the time and I remember that there was a lot of scoffing at her work. Numerous people did not take it seriously and attributed her 'outrageous' claims of mind-over-matter as being the product of an unstable batty babe (and in hollywood it's amazing how many claim to know 'fur sure' the truth about some star's life.) Personally I thought her writing a bit out there myself but then I started doing lots of spiritual work myself and I no longer think that. MacLaine is an interesting woman.
I've read them all. When I was very young they must have resonated with me. But I no longer like the books at all. I think Shirley has a wonderful imagination, is a most creative person, but to put forward her imaginings as real life events is dishonest. My apologies to Shirley in advance should she be reporting the truth!
