Nineteen-year-old Willow Harper would give anything to have saved her father from the crash. Behind the wheel, she doesn't walk away unscathed, and it's not the gash on her head or the hole in her heart that scars her most—it’s what awakes inside of her. Dark shadows lurk in the corners of Willow’s eyes. Objects move on their own. Desperate for help, she turns to three friends, but the more they know, the louder an ominous voice screams in her head, filling her with violent impulses that threaten the lives of those around her. Willow must uncover her family’s dark past and face the power within to save herself and the ones she loves. But, as the secrets unravel, the quicker the door closes on her chance for salvation.
Oh my gods! This book is amazing! Willow is such a relatable character - full of doubt and regret. She doesn't roll with the flow, or accept the first bit of information she gets. Her friends are incredible, and all of the characters are written in such an interesting way; three-dimensional and real where so many others often fall short. Palomo has managed to create a world that is recognisable and yet not. The story itself is great - captivating and intriguing. Again, Palomo has mastered the slow release and sudden twist style of writing, where one minute you think you've got the plot figured out, and the next the mat has been ripped from under you. I loved the way the story twists on itself between the 'real' and the 'other', how the dark and sordid underside sneaks through and takes over before you even realise it's happening. I love the interactions and growth between each character, and the build up to the final showdown was amazing! This book was not was I was expecting at all - and I LOVED it! Palomo is fast becoming one of my all time favourite authors!
I'm an early to bed, early to rise kind of person. However I was unable to put this book down at night! I woke up periodically through the night so of course picked it up again, even if it was just for a few minutes, and grabbed it again when I woke up. Best ghost story I've read in a while! Loved the characters and the dynamics between them. Again, B.B. managed to grab my attention and not let go. I can't wait for more.
Willow is a character that I could relate to. Her family is known around town and Willow gets picked on because of it. She remains happy even though she is constantly judged by others. That is until a fatal accident happens that changes her life forever. I really felt for Willow in this story. She had to learn to keep living even if it was too hard.
What Lies Beyond is a paranormal romance/ thriller in my opinion. I absolutely loved the relationship between Willow and her boyfriend Noah. He was definitely my favorite character in the book. I found their romance to be sweet. Even though this book has some romance I also found it very thrilling. There were chapters that had me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I also did not see the twists and turns coming until they were already there.
I think anyone who enjoys paranormal books will enjoy this one.
The characters in this book were excellently written. I was able to connect with all of them in some way, shape, or form. I was invested in what was happening to them from beginning to end. I also very much enjoyed the new twist on the supernatural and the after life presented. I am a sucker for a good ghost book, and seeing this new take on spirits and deals with demons was quite refreshing. It was clear the world depicted here was well thought out. This book was so good that as soon as I am done typing this, I am purchasing a copy of the finished product to have in my library forever. This has definite re-read potential.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
If I could give this book 10 stars I would I love the plot!
The entire time I was reading this book I was yelling at my computer screen! There’s so many little things that you really have to pay attention to and I think it really sets the foundation for what’s to come. The twists and turns throughout this book kept me hooked and I did not want to stop reading.
