«In tutto quello che abbiamo scritto, siano romanzi o commedie o altro, è nascosto e custodito il tempo che abbiamo passato mentre stavamo scrivendo. Nelle commedie quel tempo è custodito più diffusamente e più intensamente. Le commedie hanno un prima e un dopo. Hanno lunghi strascichi e intorno vi ruota una folla di luoghi e di gente. Di alcune commedie magari non ce ne importa più molto, ma quello che vi è nascosto e custodito e vi ruota intorno ci è caro per sempre. Case o stanze in cui abbiamo abitato quando le abbiamo scritte e pensate. A volte sono case o stanze in cui non ci è consentito o non vogliamo rientrare. Paesi dove non ritorneremo. Teatri. Grossi fili neri sparsi per terra. Amici che abbiamo smesso di frequentare. Voci che abbiamo devotamente ascoltato e il cui suono è perso. Visi amati. Il ricordo dei morti».

About the author

Natalia Ginzburg (née Levi) was an Italian author whose work explored family relationships, politics during and after the Fascist years and World War II, and philosophy. She wrote novels, short stories and essays, for which she received the Strega Prize and Bagutta Prize. Most of her works were also translated into English and published in the United Kingdom and United States. An activist, for a time in the 1930s she belonged to the Italian Communist Party. In 1983 she was elected to Parliament from Rome as an Independent.
