This title examines mermaids, water sprites, and other merfolk in folklore and culture. It also focuses on how depictions of these water creatures changed over time and how they remain popular in fantasy art and literature and movies.
This book had it's moments as a great beginning guide to mermaids for children. It talked about their habitat, physiology and behavior. The photographs are artwork were fantastic. There was even a world tour of mermaid sightings and what the mermaids in each area of the globe were like.
What I didn't like about the book was that a lot of the writing was repeated, and repetitive. A perfect example is the prologue. That entire section, almost verbatim, is repeated again, and sections of it are continually repeated throughout the book. It makes me think either the author ran out of things to say, or she thought her readers were going to be not so quick to notice.
If you love mermaids, and learning about their legends and behaviors this is a nice, short, guide that covers a lot.
Focusing on Mermaids & Mermen from stories, myths, movies and more, the author does a great job of giving readers just enough information for a entertaining yet informative read. Nicely illustrated throughout. Geared more for preteen readers.
If you know nothing about mermaids, this is where you should start. This book gives general information about mermaids, from fakes to the different types of mermaids by country and culture!
