I am a quilter, but wasn't sure I was going to like this book. I had never heard of this author, but turned out her reflections were encouraging. Also she was close to my age, so it was fun to recognize quotes/names of people I am familiar with. There are probably better examples of the actual quilts, but the styles shown may be due to the era when the book was published.
This book is a quick read - it’s not a comprehensive history and it’s not a devotional. It’s a memoir and touching. Not sappy but evenhanded and points to truths worth remembering.
Enjoyed reading the history behind familiar quilt patterns. Even more, enjoyed the parables Lucinda McDowell creates as she compares quilts and life experiences. She says, “ If my life is like a quilt, then surely God is the Divine Quilter.”
I enjoyed the stories of the origins of some common quilt designs as well as her stories and how she connected her life to some of them. I would have enjoyed it more I think, in a historical fiction format with greater depth to the stories - rather than her religious connections.
Beautiful stories and metaphors of quilt patterns and how they relate to God’s work in our lives and in our hearts. Would recommend for anyone who loves quilting or appreciates the art!
