Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.

Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.

Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.

According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.

I never did realise that Noddy had musical connections but in this tale he demonstrates that he has a liking for the bagpipes and once he hears a wonderful sound coming from Big Ear's cupboard, he is taken with it and wants to know more about it.

It turns out to be bagpipes and Big Ears blows into the bagpipes and shows Noddy the sound that they make and Noddy comments, 'What a wonderful sound.' And he wishes that he could play the bagpipes. He asks Big Ears to teach him and on being told that it takes a lot of hard work, Noddy says that he is prepared to practise first thing every day.

The first morning Noddy decides to practise, he is unable to get any decent sound out of the bagpipes so, seeing his kite on the side, he decides that a better option would be to go out and fly it! The following morning he is just about to begin his practice when Mr Sparks calls and asks if he wants to go fishing. Once again Noddy sees that as a better option and the bagpipes are put aside once more.

The third morning Noddy is determined that nothing will stop him from practising but when he looks for the bagpipes they have disappeared. It appears that the bagpipes have a life of their own for Mr Sparks and Dinah Doll are imperilled by the bagpipes suddenly appearing behind them and disturbing them from they are doing. They report the incidents to Mr Plod at the same time as Noddy reports a bagpipes robbery. Mr Plod comments, 'I have just heard about a mysterious musical instrument on the loose in Toy Town.' And off they go to investigate.

A troublesome chase then begins that sees the quartet in all sorts of bother before Big Ears explains that the bagpipes are magic and just want to make music and if they don't they become restless. So Big Ears forms a band with Noddy, Mr Sparks, Dinah Doll and Mr Plod and they play in the park. This brings the bagpipes out into the open and they join in as Big Ears comments that they are tamed at last.

So altogether the Toy Town band gives one last performance of a song written by Noddy and everyone is happy once again.
