In “Ceremonial Magic: A Guide to the Mechanisms of Ritual,” Israel Regardie attempts to simplify ceremonial magic. Regardie believed—as do many chaos magicians—that if a ritual is too complicated, then one should omit it. Regardie’s approach to ceremonial magic is actually quite refreshing and filled with common sense. For example, he states that you should,
“…Do not do things blindly, merely because a book tells you to. Understand the reasons for what you do and what you employ. They are basically simple and the existing literature, in spite of some complicating features, really does explain the fundaments. Mystification has no part in magic. Simplicity and sincerity and enthusiasm have…” (pg. 26).
Because ceremonial magic places so much emphasis on a (male) God-Satan duality and on Jesus Christ (another male), this type of magic would normally only be attractive to Christians or former Christians who have a background in that religious dogma.
Regardless of its religious leanings, Regardie did a fantastic job of explaining many of the rituals and the meanings behind them using clear language.
