"""The riveting story full of anecdotes from his experience in the Tata Group will help finance professionals, CEOs and Board members to navigate the high seas of business that is prone to 'future shock' and uncertainties. This is a great ringside view from the author who was often in the ring himself.” –

Yesterday was a special day, when I received a copy of “Mask Behind the Face” which I had ordered couple of days back. The book is authored by Mr Anil P Goel, whom I had the good fortune of working under, in Indian Hotels Company Limited, during the period 2012-2016. I was then the CFO of Roots Corporation (Ginger Hotels). Mr Goel was the Executive Director and CFO of our parent company, Indian Hotels Company Ltd.
During our brief interactions, before board meetings of Roots Corporation he would guide me and my colleague Dhanraj on various matters related to the company. I always found his insights and nuggets of knowledge very valuable. I would also observe how he would carry himself in the board meetings, ask piercing questions to dig deep and understand the overall performance of the company. He always advised us to know about the other aspects of business then limiting to finance and play a very wholistic role.
So, I was thrilled to know that post his retirement he authored a book named “Mask Behind the Face”. I was also eager to know the person, travel with him on a 30 years long journey in two of the most admired companies in Tata Group, appreciate the challenges the companies had faced during the last few decades and how the leadership team of which Mr Goel was a very important member, responded to. My expectations from the book was sky high given his background, his knowledge, the exposure that he got at the highest level.
Was my expectations met?
I would say, it surpassed. In 175 pages Mr Goel could compress his journey, evolution of companies he worked for, his own take on various subjects including profitability, sustainability, role of CEO, CFO and the board members to name a few. Some of the insights were very refreshing and gave me lot of food for thought.
I strongly recommend this book for everyone who is interested in business, finance management, corporate governance, leadership and strategy.
An engrossing read that takes you through the author's journey in 2 of the most respected companies of the venerable Tata group in the last 30 years. Corporate intrigues; strategy; Board room wins and failures, all told through the eyes of an insider. The masks people wear at work and what lies underneath revealed through the author's personal professional journey.
