A fairy-tale marriage to jet-setter Dexter gains Anne Graham entrance to the exclusive Palm Beach society, but Dexter's lust, greed, and vengeance destroy Anne and send their twin daughters, Carrie and Gracie, on a collision course with fate
Where to begin? Twins is a sexy, sexy tale of sexy twins and their equally sexy parents in the very sexy world of Palm Beach. Basically, the quote on the back cover says it all: "Sometimes fiction is more scandalous than the truth". The insanity of this comment is really the cornerstone of this story. It tells the story of Carrie and Gracie, ridiculously beautiful and voluptuous Palm Beach socialite twins (surprise!), and their parents, the beautiful (and dead) mother Anne, and domineering and sexy father Dexter. It alternates between the past, telling Anne's story of her relationship with Dexter, their marriage and divorce, Dexter taking the twins away in a scandalous courtroom drama, using sex to let Anne see the twins (sexy!), and then Anne discovering Dexter having a slightly sexy shower with Carrie and then going insane, trying to kidnap her own kids, put in prison, and then committing suicide (oops - I might have given too much away); and the present, where Dexter remarries several times, Gracie is in an institution, and Carrie is married to the sexy movie star, Michael. Dexter and Carrie have a really disturbing relationship, are naked around each other way too much for everyone's comfort level. There's a vague scene of Dexter and Carrie waking up in bed together...naked! God, did I ever want to vomit while reading this book. But I digress. Carrie finds out she's pregnant shortly after this and quickly marries Michael. So her kids are possibly her siblings? It's never really understood. But during this sexy escapade, Michael is on a weekend special with Gracie. BUT HE THINKS ITS CARRIE! Oh, the humanity. He finds out that it's Gracie he really loves, because Carrie is boning her dad way, way too much. It basically ends with Carrie being beaten and raped by some dude that hates her father, Dexter killing him and then IRONICALLY (or not) getting sent to prison; exactly where he had set Anne up to go with his masterminding of the kidnapping scheme. Michael and Gracie end up together. Yawn.
As an identical twin myself, I thought this book would be interesting, but I was wrong. It was TOTALLY unbelievable that NOONE could tell them apart, even after switching on boyfriends. C'mon! But, I went along with it until it got too weird for me. There were a few very graphic sex scenes that could have been toned down, but weren't. There was the "ick" factor of how the Dad (Dexter) favored his one daughter (Carrie) and controlled and manipulated his other daughter and wife. I continued on because I wanted to find out the "past" part as the story jumped from past to present. However, it was not worth the read.
This is about a very domenering man who is the father of twin girls. Can he destroy their mother ? Does he have a very favorite twin ? Can he control that twin ? Does he destroy her marriage? Can he keep the other twin locked in a mental institution ? Will the twins love for each other win ?
No woman could resist Dexter Portino, handsome and gorgeous king of the jet set. Beautiful, talented photographer Anne Graham fell under his seductive spell, and when she won his love, she gained entrance into the extravagant, exclusive world of Palm Beach society. The birth of her beautiful twin daughters made her fairy tale marriage complete.
Then all the glitter and glamour began to tarnish. For behind Dexter's dazzling smile lay the heart of a ruthless man driven by lust, greed, and revenge. A man who would wield power to manipulate both Palm Beach society - and the law - to destroy her.
At the center of the scandal are Carrie and Gracie - twins who have shared everything, even the same man. Born into a world where being 'in' means everything - intoxicating, indulgent, insane, even incestuous - they've grown up fast. Now they're headed on a collision course with fate, when even the incredibly wealthy can't hide all their secrets.
I certainly liked Twins by Roxanne Pulitzer; it was not the sort of book that I typically read, but was surprisingly enjoyable nevertheless. The plot actually turned out to be more interesting than I was expecting. I must say that the writing reminded me slightly of Jackie Collins; "Wealthy, bored socialites living scandalous lives among the jet set." I give this book an A!
where to start? is she having an affair with her dad? is the other one crazy? who did Michael actually marry?
*I'd like to also add that the first review of this posted on Amazon has some person naming this as one of her top-ten books. What a mind-blower! Nev, read the amazon reviews- hilarious.*
