*This book is addressed to the preprofessional home economist who is preparing for one or more of a variety of human service roles. It presents a framework for understanding home economics as a profession and for developing a sense of professionalism. . . . There is a need felt by those involved in home economics today to have a conceptual view of the profession, to have a philosophy that expresses how and where home economists fit into the fabric of society. . . This book recognizes the conceptual and definitional issues of home economics by presenting a particular view of the philosophy underlying the practice of home economics. . .The book presents a conceptual view of home economics that relates to a wide variety of professional specializations such as home management, nutrition, dietetics, consumer studies, family studies and clothing and textiles. What unifies these diverse areas is their direct involvement in the helping process. The integrating framework used by the authors is based on a view of helping as a problem solving process. . . In summary, the book presents a comprehensive framework to view ow professional home economists operate in helping others to achieve their needs.*

Though this book is now more than 35 years old, and the profession continues to evolve, students and new professionals may find it of interest. I have had it on my reference shelf for all that time, and read it for the first time now before I pass it on to a good (new) home. As it is a textbook and reference book, it is filled with technical language and ideas. I have to admit I skimmed a lot.>
