A very well-informed account of the development of music in Britain, focusing on established composers. I found the text a little dense with factual ‘name-calling’ of notable composers, which made it a little dull and tedious to read at times. I think this comes with the territory of having to summarize a musical era in the span of a few pages.
A great use of this book is to use the index of music that has been recorded and released on CD. I look forward to streaming each album mentioned, if it’s available, and listening to the various works of some great British composers.
