The Styx

This is a psychological horror/black comedy concerning a drug-fuelled battle through time between two pretenders to God's throne, one with good intentions, while the other harbours sadistic and cannibalistic tendencies. The river Styx runs through this story and The Riverman Sloo has discovered a way to reverse the flow. By taking his number in the Biblical directory '767' and committing horrific acts 7 days after the resurrection to six chosen disciples on the 7th year, he can give his ship of lost souls their second coming and surpass God's reign on earth.

This book includes Dusk till Dawn twists mixed with unsettling David Lynch surrealism leading to an ever-increasing crescendo.

Unfortunatly I could not finish this book, from the first line I knew I wouldn't like it and I didnt get any further then page 40, reading the blurb at the back this book really appealed to me, it was supposed be kind of supernatral, what with it being about the the keeper of the river styx and him trying to overthrow god, and I get that it is around a group of junkies but the writing style was just jumbled and scattered and most of the time it just confused the hell out of me, random little seperate sentences in the middle of the paragraph which really made no sense were put in and that did it for me I just had enough of the inane writing style and awful story telling.
But that is just my view, I am sure that kind of writing style and storytelling appeal to other people just not me.
I would not recommend it.

I actually really enjoyed it. Because of the exact reasons Clare listed as faults.
It was so different to any book i have ever read. The writing style was quick and
i felt that added to the ever quickening pace of the story. By Part 3 the whole novel was
in a frenzy, and there was so much action. I found the drug humour hilarious, and the
characters banter really true to life. I think maybe it is very male orientated, and
for real hardcore horror fans only. But if you can relate to what's going on, then this is definitely
the read for you.

I am an avid fan of horror books, and "The Styx" was recommended to me at a Borders book store in London by a member of staff. Struggling to find a good read, the staff member took me to the staff picks section and explained how the book would keep me on edge of my seat the whole time. This was certainly the case!! - not only an engrossing page turner, but a journey into the mind of a horror genius. I was hooked from the outset. In addition I highly recommend "Icky Pucket",Matt white's second book which is also exceptional, dark and foreboding.
