This book is about the life of an engineer in the Air Force. It brings out the impact of technology in the operations of a modern Air Force. The kind of technical and operational challenges engineers face in the Air Force and how these are surmounted. How just attaching a laser designation device to a free falling bomb improved its accuracy by 5000% and how the invention of RADAR altered the course of the Battle for Britain. How does Electronic warfare work and how do nations counter it? The book also shows the social side of officers in the Air Force. In a series of very interesting episodes of incidents and events the book takes you through the glamorous yet challenging life of officers and engineers in the Indian Air Force.
(Full Disclosure : The author, Wing Commander Pradeep Valsangkar is a relative.) I have known the author for over three decades now but I feel that for the first time, I know and understand him as never before. This is the strength of the book. It tells the human side of what it is to be a part of the Indian Air Force. The voice is that of a young and innocent, patriotic and ambitious, engineer working who is not in the combat zone but feels very much connected to it. Most importantly, the voice is genuine and honest. It is not a literary masterpiece, but many of us would find the stories, the aspirations and the vulnerabilities relatable. Clearly, the author uses the protagonist to tell both real and fictional stories of many in the armed forces. It is easy to find non-fiction material on the inner workings of the armed forces but these are often distant, glorified and not really relatable. The author's fictionalized account also glorifies the experience a bit, and is never critical, yet it touches on the universal humanity of it all. It is an easy-breezy fun read.
