Gifts to the Tzars 1500-1700: Treasures from the Kremlin
Created to accompany an exhibition at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (from September 2001 until January 2002), this hefty catalog features objects that are distinguished by their expensive materials and high level of artisanry. The decorative arts of the catalog are organized by their country of origin, including the Christian East, the Ottoman and Safavid courts, Poland, Lithuania, Austria, England, the Dutch Republic, Sweden, Denmark and Schleswig-Holstein. Essays contextualize the collection with studies on ceremony, foreign relations, diplomacy, the European decorative arts, and the gifts received from the 16th through the 18th centuries.
