Pearson, Michael - The £5 Virgin
Grabbed this off the shelf, thinking it was filled with Victorian detective mysteries.
Wrong.
Book follows journalist WT Stead, and allies Salvation Army, as they try to raise the age of sexual consent from 13 to something a little older.
They also disenfranchise the hundreds of brothels and omnipresent prostitution.
Politicians and lobbyists fought them every step of the way.
This happened in the late 1880’s.
One hundred years on, financial lobbyists and politicians continue their dalliances.
Not a fun read, but it held my interest.
Crusading journalist Stead, by the way, was last seen boarding the SS Titanic.
