Ollie is the only child of an important siren family in her clan, but she's also hopelessly clumsy and a bitter disappointment to them. When the world around the Sirens begins to dim, and evil begins to rise, Ollie is the perfect sacrifice for her people. She is sent to the world above, with a spell and instructions to find The Legacy Stone, the only hope for healing the darkness that is spreading through the land. In her first few moments on land, Ollie accidentally binds a stranger to her, forcing the bystander, Kavan to join her on her quest to find The Stone and save both of their homes.

The Spelled Stone
Cursed Seas Collection

The Earth has been destroyed to the point that there is hardly any life left, both on land and beneath the seas. Legend has it that there are special stones made from a meteor that can repair the damage done by the Apocalypse. These stones are called Legacy Stones. They can only be found by special beings who are blessed and helped by remaining Mages if they can be found.
Darkness has taken over the land and is now beginning to take over the waters.
Beneath the Sea there are clans of Sirens, among them is the Clan Quorin. Among the clan is Olinda Senia Quorin, next in line to lead her people.
The Quorin along with other clans foolishly believe that nothing can harm them and the Darkness will not touch them, Egos are very high with these kind.

On to our story, Olinda is considered the most clumsy of all Sirens. The elders are tired of her messing things up. She is chosen to take on the journey to find the stone and save the underwater world, (their way of just getting rid of the problem child).
Ollie unlike the others believes the darkness is coming and feels their time is coming.
She is tasked with bringing the light back to the world, although she is frightened she has been given no choice.
Along her path she comes across a woman who lives in a type of bubble, she walks on dry land but lives beneath the sea. She teaches Ollie how to survive on land, how to breathe. She teaches her a spell to cast that will allow her to walk the land and survive without water to breathe.
As she approaches the land she says the spell, unfortunately she does not notice a human close by. The spell no only binds her to the land but also to a human man named Kavan Daniels.
Kavan and Ollie have to work together to not only find the Legacy Stone but to also find another Mage to aid them and also remove the magical bond they have on one another.
Now they are tied together on a mission to save not only her world but his as well.
A mission that has many dangerous obstacles in their way. Can a mortal man teach a clumsy, naive Siren how to survive in this hostile world? Can they succeed or with the treacherous path destroy them? Or is Olinda much stronger than she has always believed, can she and Kavan save the world an maybe even each other? Guess ya gotta read to find out.

I was gifted a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. While this is not the type of books I normally read I actually liked it. The beginning was a bit confusing for me but I began to follow along quite well.

SPOILERS

Way too many discrepancies like... she would walk into the room and swim out. She would be very strong if she had lived in the sea and went on land as her body would have built up a ton of strength to combat currents etc. But instead she is a weakling and the same for her speach. It's stilted the entire time. She's lame. She's supposedly smart but seemingly knows very little (and not just because she's on land and out of her element). There was instalove which I hate; it was explained away by having been bound together when she tried to cast magic to live on the land. I also very much disliked how much emphasis was placed on slavery. This is supposedly hundreds of years in the post apocalyptic future and yet it speaks of the slavery of black people by whites as if it were yesterday. I highly doubt that would be on anyone's mind at that point.
Basically the story is of a good for nothing siren who is sent away on a fools mission to save their area of the sea. She goes to land and meets this buff guy (how is he buffer than the sea people, again makes no sense) and is bound to him. He takes her to the closest settlement. During their trip she saved him and then he saves her. At the settlement she gets better and they solidify their union (definitely not a well written sex scene). She meets the last mage who sends her into the rainforest (somehow she has lost consciousness for 2 days but kavan manages to know where she needs to go and there's no explanation for her blackout). They get the stone immediately and get on a boat where the darkness attempts to lure her in. She escapes and manages to get the stone where it needs to be. When they both wake up they're on the same beach from the beginning and go back to the settlement. Get married. 15 years later they're next in line to be healer and chief respectively and have twins. She meets her brother who has come to land and asks her to come home. She decides she definitely belongs in land w her new people. That's that.
The conversations were incredibly stilted. it was annoyong. Like she didn't know how to talk. She's a weenie yet everyone tells her how strong she is *groan*. Lots of cussing that seemed unnecessarily thrown in for flare or something; it wouldn't have been a big deal but the author put so much emphasis on cussing (if you don't you're a snob) etc.
I do not recommend this book.

I’ve been wanting an interracial paranormal romance for a while. When I saw that this book was available I jumped on. From the first page to the last I was hooked.

First of all Olinda is so much stronger than she seems in the beginning. What she goes through while she lived in the sea as a Siren broke my heart. She was such a good and kind woman that I didn’t understand why she’d been treated in such a manner. When she reaches the surface, things change for the better and she becomes who she was meant to.

Kavan is tough and crass and he makes no apologies for it. Living on his own on the surface hasn’t been easy for him. Yet we get to see the most tender side of him when he encounters Ollie. It actually made me sigh to see his little gestures of caring towards her.

They are from two separate worlds, but they fit together perfectly.

There is one section of the story when I questioned why Ollie would even attempt to accomplish the impossible mission she was sent on. Her people had not been kind to the people of the land throughout history. When I read this part it reminded me of a highly controversial issue that happened in real life (you’ll have to read the book because I don’t give spoilers). Something unjust to the extreme that the Sirens did that made me angry and had me half hoping that Ollie would leave the stone right where it was instead of saving the ocean dwellers. But she has a more forgiving nature than me and did the right thing.

Something I loved about this book was that it left me on edge. I had no idea how it would end and that kept me reading long past my bedtime. A fantastic read.

WOW! I absolutely loved this story! I couldn't put it down. We've all read the coming of age stories, but this puts a new spin on it. Ollie's & Kavan's story is not only touching but heart-wrenching as well. I absolutely love the duo that wrote this book! I can't wait to read more from Natalie G. Owens & Zee Monodee. While this book isn't YA it is safe for most teenagers to read without a lot of sex, blood & gore.
