I have read several of the author’s books this year and this story was my favorite. The historical references were insightful and the boys’ perceptions realistic and compelling. The mystery kept deepening, beckoning the reader to continue, and thus would make the book a great choice for reluctant readers as well as for kids who read well. I would have liked to have seen the Smith graduate Mom continue to write, but that’s my own bias.

I know this book is written for boys, but I still found it fascinating. I loved the story line and the characters, including Captain the dog. At times I found it hard to put this book down, interesting twists and turns in the story.
