Jeremiah Blackwood learns the consequences of sleeping around, the hard way. J.B. Burrage gives a glimpse of the player lifestyle in his novel Caught Up. Jeremiah Blackwood is a successful publisher in a small southern town. However, his success is nearly overshadowed by his sorrid extracurricular activities. From late night clubbing to X-rated house parties, Jeremiah’s life is controlled by lust. This lust causes him to fall for Shirley a confused bisexual that also does her share of sleeping around. Shirley entangles Jeremiah in the town’s sexual escapades through a continuous string of lies and deceptive acts.
The author was victorious in his venture away from sci-fi. This story of relationships keeps the reader engaged. Understanding the reason for Jeremiah’s behavior, particularly his fearlessness of unsafe sex, would have been helpful. Jeremiah is intelligent and entrepreneurial in his career, yet immature, naïve, and foolish concerning his love life. This is an enjoyable and all too true novel of the love triangles of Black people.

Never Trust a Big Butt and a Smile

Jeremiah Blackwood, a young, handsome writer and publisher as well as a ladies’ man, opens his heart and pours out the details of an encounter with a certain female. Never one to pass up a pretty face, he couldn’t help but approach the sexy Shirley, never knowing the drama it would bring into his life.

At less than 200 pages, Jacob Burrage’s “Caught Up” is a very quick and easy read. Unfortunately, it isn’t much of a story. Rather, it’s more of one situation stretched out to its maximum. It lacked any real character development. Instead, readers basically witness main character Jeremiah sleep with one woman after the next without rhyme or reason until his actions backfire. There was drama but it appeared forced, like it was drama for the sake of drama more than it was pertinent to the story’s development. Readers really had nothing to base the drama on as readers don’t know the characters well enough to know or understand the reasons behind their behavior. And at one time, I swear I was reading (watching) R. Kelly’s ‘Trapped in the Closest’ because of some similarities.

“Caught Up” was by no means a bad book, but it wasn’t good either. It was just okay. With more development, potential is there.
