Humphrey's Farm Adventure offers a journey. Initially it's easy to be swayed by the padded cover, the thick paper pages, the mellow use of pastels throughout and the soft lines of the classic hand drawn artwork. The font used is a jumbly non-joined up handwriting style, attempting to replicate the writing of a younger child. This complements the art style very well.

After the initial look comes a disappointment. The story is not particularly well written and feels like a child is telling you a story, rather than the typical approach of most story books for toddlers and pre-schoolers.

It turns out that the little ears don't mind how it's written and are easily engaged, so put aside your own expectations for Humphrey is actually quite good. Pre-schoolers won't appreciate the animal recap features as much, however the story still offers a sweet relaxing pre-bedtime experience.

This book is not the best in my eyes. It is a picture book but the pictures are muted. Maybe if they had bold, black outlines they'd stand out a bit, but as they are they are a little wishy-washy.

The story is not much either. Basically Humphrey goes to a farm with another elephant, Tilly, and feeds the animals. Then he washes his hands. And that is the story. All a bit babyish I think. If you want to hold a child's attention then you need to do more than that. So I think this book is aimed at kids who are just learning to speak, or get to know farm animals. But I don't see it being read multiple times before they get bored.

Cute book for young kids. I like the very basic format of the story because it mirrors how kids are taught to write their own stories when they are in second/third grade.
