Hooked

Rate this book
Hooked is a contemporary work of fiction set in and around an impoverished addiction rehab centre called ‘Freedom House’. It tells a dramatic and indulgent story of people and their familiarity with drugs as well as with each other. Throughout the story the resident group at Freedom House antagonise their counsellor David Pell continuously. Yet he always manages to remain one step ahead by using the outward tools of arrogance and humour and a paradoxically transparent love for those clients in his care.
The patients themselves are a mixed group who’s individual and often tragic stories are intertwined with both humour and sadness. They love and hate with equal passion yet ironically will go to any lengths to protect and care for each other. The story is spiced throughout with a mixture of both humorous and tragic anecdotes in equal measure. Derisive banter and rancorous contention go together with a cast of attention-grabbing characters whose confident, sometimes brash exteriors conflict with a self-doubting vulnerability and a needy soul.
The narrative gives insight into the diverse difficulties of addiction and a teasing glimpse at life within the normally sacrosanct rooms of Alcoholics Anonymous. Add to this is an inexhaustible supply of plots, characters, comedy and heart wrenching drama and the reader is guaranteed to become HOOKED.
