My 6 yo really, REALLY loved it. He enjoyed the repetitive nature of the "It's a...It's a...It's a Mitzvah." My biggest issue is that the book continues to perpetuate the notion that a mitzvah is a good deed when, in fact, some mitzvot are not good deeds. And the actual definition is "commandment." Yes, I realize that this is a children's book. But there are age-appropriate ways of expanding the definition to include the God-factor in it.

So nice to see a Jewish-themed book whose characters were not drawn from Fiddler on the Roof! Does an excellent job of showing preschoolers to second graders some examples of mitzvahs they can perform.

Commandments are hard to explain to the very young, but in IT’S A … IT’S A … IT’S A MITZVAH by Liz Suneby and Diane Heiman with joyful animals drawn by Laurel Molk the mitzvot (good deeds) are described and shown in an easy to understand manner. From welcoming new friends and feeding the hungry to cheering on your friends and forgiving their mistakes, the repeated refrain “it’s a … it’s a … it’s a mitzvah” helps to bring these concepts to life. Understanding and performing these acts of loving kindness early on will help children grow into kind, thoughtful, and lovely adults who take part in tikkun olam (healing the world). What more can you ask for?

Young children often have a hard time understanding what they can do to make the world a better place. This fun book featuring Mitzvah Meerkat helps them to see all of the small things that they CAN do. From cheering on friends to forgiving mistakes to celebrating Shabbat, Mitzvah Meerkat and his animal friends show the importance of doing mitzvot in a child-friendly way. Recommended for grades PK-2.

6 star book

this should have been Caldecott honored. the critters Laurel Molk drew are so full of life and joy and movement! and the story about what a mitzvah is wonderfully explained and shown. (newbery medal worthy, but joyfilled books usually don't get honored)

For younger children in particular this presents the concept of what is a mitzah in a very fun and yet concrete fashion.
