I received an ARC (author review copy) from the author. Being a child of the 80s (born 1987), my knowledge of Daft Punk's history and the history of EDM is practically nonexistent. The introduction to this book was a fascinating worm hole; I spent a long time just getting through Rosen's introductory YouTube videos. I'd highly recommend going through the book to start and creating your own playlist!
In my mind, Daft Punk is commercial. So it was really interesting to read where they came from and what their influences were. I knew so little about their start that even listening to their first album was a journey.
"Teenager you wants to be part of something. You want to belong to a subculture, and you want to fight for it to be accepted. Once the subculture gets accepted, it's a great thing because you were a part of it, but then you're not part of subculture anymore."
I think that quote for me sums up a larger message in the book. That music originates from somewhere and understanding that background helps listeners appreciate it even more. I know I leave with a greater understanding of Daft Punk and EDM!
