The book took some time for me to get into it but once I got started it went along well. I hadn’t read any earlier works so I needed some time to get to the plot. There’s a complicated mixture of twists and turns ranging from witchcraft, through TV archaeology, through far right political groups and espionage in the Second World War. I did guess the identity of the mysterious corpse but the motive for the murder only emerged late for me. It’s an enjoyable read and I will return to others in the series.
Who was that chap dressed in black, and why was he riding away so quickly, after shots were fired. Why years after the was were secrets still being kept? Why was there a grave amongst the brambles, outside the church cemetery? What,, whose was the body that had lain on top of that lonely coffin for 50 years and what does all this have to do with these village residents?
