Call of Duty: Showing Boys the Real Jesus
Many boys believe that God is an old man on a throne who wants to take all the fun out of life, require them to give up their identity, wear geeky clothing, and memorize a list of rules in order to be 'spiritual.' Written by an Army officer and youth pastor, Call of Duty will help parents understand why their son doesn't seem to care about Christianity. With humor and insight, Cliff Graham describes the world of modern teenage boys and gives the reasons why they roll their eyes whenever they hear the words, 'Let's go to church.' The crisis with boys continues to grow, and the only way to stop it is by showing the next generation of men who the real Jesus is. A list of rules doesn't inspire a great soldier. The Call of Duty does.

To be honest, I picked up this book simply because it had Call of Duty in the title. But then I saw how it was to help boys know the real Jesus and I knew I needed this book. As a Pastor, I will run into a lot of boys who don't understand Jesus, and have never had anyone really tell them about the real Jesus. And I am not just talking about those under 18. Our culture is full of boys who have not made the transition to men past the age of 18.
I enjoy Cliff's style of writing: stories mixed with truth. These are always the best in my opinion. From his own experience, Cliff helps us to see the different groups teenage boys fit in. Knowing where a boy comes from and how he thinks and deals with issues will a go long way in connecting with them.
I was reading this book while I was speaking at a middle school camp, and I was able to identify the boys in different groups. This helped me to connect with them on a personal level. Cliff also reminded me that in a few months they will not remember what I spoke about, and that is ok. What they will remember is me being personal with them and that I taught them spiritual truth. This freed me a lot, and I did not concern myself with whether they would remember every single word I said. Christianity should be relational anyways.
Thank you Cliff for a great book on showing boys how to be warriors and know the real Jesus.
