Slow Burn

Smart, tough, and sexy. Those are just a few of the words people would use to describe Ember, and not necessarily in that order. Then again, being a witch with a penchant for the kind of magic almost exclusive to dark, steamy nights soaked in lust, it's easy to get them mixed up. Content would have been another choice word, if you asked her. With a successful apothecary that helped the people of her community, and no shortage of lovers eagerly awaiting their chance to try and satisfy her, it was the kind of life that Ember was happy to live in peace for a very long time. Too bad there were some people who didn't feel the same way.

It's official. N.L. Paradox is one of my favorite authors. The Ember Doyle series has elements that make me think of Laurell K Hamilton's "Merry Gentry" series (or to some extent, even the "Anita Blake" series), but Paradox's voice is uniquely her own. Her characters are multilayered and her stories take you on a whole emotional rollercoaster that leave you waiting with baited breath for the next twist and turn.

In this one, Ember is a witch...a "sex witch"...and you would think that might simply make this a cheap bodice ripper type of book. While it has its moments of salacious interludes, they are really only small elements in a much larger, more nuanced tale. Ember gets embroiled in an investigation through blackmail and comes to learn some things about herself and her mysterious compatriot that change everything she knows about the world.

But if you want to know more details, read the book description. All I want to say is that I am glad that I have found another author who is diverse in their writing, their catalogs, and their styles. This is a series that has a few more entries (which I will be delving into shortly), and Paradox is an author that I will be following for a long time to come.

The sex makes up for some weaknesses of the book

What could have been stronger: the blackmail, a world with super strong Fae Vampires and Witches fears the humans? The magic system, dark magic vs light magic, the spell casting system. The falling so strongly for a guy just because of his looks, a bdsm community where Doms would grab women they just met, thinking they must be a sub.

The strong: smart heroin who has sex with whom she wants and even after finding me right keeps on having more sex with others, a hero who can play submissive but likes other roles as well. A Mr right who is okay with his bonded mate having sex with others. A strong smart curious woman hero

Ember Doyle

A brilliant first novel in this new trilogy and good overall reading from start to finish. The new character is very well portrayed and the other characters in this book are extremely important to the novel.
