The weight of her backpack hunched her shoulders as she made her way to her next class. The halls were filled with laughing students and slamming locker doors. The perfect high school symphony of chaos. She looked around at everything, this being her final year of high school. She wanted to take it all in and remember what her life has been like in these halls and with these classmates. Lots of things on the horizon to look forward to, but she wanted to savor some of the sweet memories.

Brighten Me is the first book in the Full Bloom trilogy and follows three high school friends as they navigate their senior year of high school. Amy, a prolific baker who wants to own her own bakery some day. Elaine, who is in love with books and the fictional men within the pages. And Kate, who loves plants and uses them as comfort when dealing with the pressures and stress of life.

This book follows each girls’ perspective which I appreciated, because I always enjoy getting to see the world through each characters’ eyes. Each of these friends have real life pressures to deal with all while trying to find love and maintain their friendship. It also comes with all the high school drama, which causes some dilemmas for the friends. The pacing and the dialogue wasn’t always perfect, but I loved the friendship dynamic and look forward to seeing what this trilogy brings for these girls next.

If you’re a YA contemporary fan, especially with all the high school drama and young teenage love, then you may enjoy this book.
