Pretty decent YA fantasy. The pacing is consistent and fast, and there’s no hodgepodge logic. Anytime you go, “What? That doesn’t make sense!”, the author jumps right in with an explanation. Count on that. The only thing I was apprehensive about was......buuuut I guess it’s for the sake of the plot.
This whole thing is set in a fictional Joseon-like country Reikokoku (麗虎國) - a patriarchal society rife with wealth inequality and abuse of power. This society is a hierarchy going from the royals to the nobles to the citizens to the commoners to the wanderers and then the slaves. There are two great ruling powers, namely the King and the Daishinkan (大神官) which is kinda like the position of medieval Popes and Kings. The king selects the Daishinkan but the Daishinkan can dismiss the king by the power of Heaven or something like that. Problem is, current Daishinkan’s getting to be a lil old and needs a replacement. There's two candidates and there's a legend in the country. Some kid with a third eye's gonna come riding in with a white tiger, and with his third eye, see peoples' true natures. And that's what the book's all about. A priest (神官) named Keikan (鶏冠) who's tasked with bringing back a rumoured third eye boy named Tensei (天青). Oh right and basically Tensei's bodyguard - Soutetsu (曹鉄).
Keikan seems like a tsundere at first, but he's more a clumsy and hotheaded airhead? type of character. Tensei is a stubborn loud crybaby kid, but he's got a good heart that's what. And Soutetsu is kinda...just there...and nothing really stands out about him except for his utmost loyalty towards Tensei. These three are not the typical character profiles I like, so it took me quite a while to warm up to them. The banter between the three is quite enjoyable so there's that. There's also a prince who crossdressed when first meeting the trio, and he himself seems like an interesting profile.
There's also a big twist regarding the "villain" but imo even with the lack of foreshadowing it's pretty easy to guess. As the 1st book of the series, 宮廷神官物語 sets the basics of the world, but leaves much room for expansion in the future. There are characters underdeveloped compared to the main pair, Keikan, and Tensei, but as the author herself stated that this is a coming-of-age sort of story, I'll expect them to be more fleshed out later on.
